Is this the former EGM - 1UP Hsu? I remember he was great at EGM, and then suddenly, he threw all journalistic integrity to the wind to shill for Xbox at 1up.

Still, I feel sorry this happened to him and his team.

Also, people saying this is a natural side effect of "consolidation" are basically making the argument against it happening. If that's true (and it is) it simply means less jobs in the industry. So a healthier industry would look like more, smaller, companies. All of them taking care of their own operations and making products that people want to pay for.

MS is literally eating the industry and destroying lives and the hobby in the process. It's not even possible to argue otherwise at this point.

More mind-melting (if you're an Xbox fan) news due next week I'm told.
Oooohh.

Hopefully it sends them into a meltdown.

What would happen if MS announces going third-party during a state of play soon? 🤔

Two thirds of players in Japan play on mobile or PC, where do they buy retail copies of mobile and PC games?

image.png

Regarding gaming revenue in Japan (2022, we still don't have the 2023 numbers):
Mobile games US$8.5 billion
Console software US$2.7 billion
PC games US$1.3 billion
https://80.lv/articles/japanese-gaming-market-keeps-growing/

This is a total of $12.5B gaming revenue in Japan, being $9.8B (78.4%) from PC+mobile (so digital only) and 21.6% from consoles (digital+physical). So even if 100% of the console software revenue were from physical game copies (which obviously isn't the case at all) it would be barely a fifth of the total. Meaning, physical games in Japan are a small portion of the gaming market like in the rest of the countries.

There's nothing wrong, but if nobody buys them there will be no point on selling them.

I think the smarter thing would be to repeat what they did with PS5 Slim: to have the disk reader as add-on. But it would be great if it would also read PS1-PS3 CDs and DVDs to run disks of these platforms (if they still work) as a BC addon.

Again, I'm not trying to derail the thread when this is about Microsoft laying off 1900 employees, but what does Japanese users playing games on PC and mobile have to do with PlayStation physical market software sales in that region? Again just look at the leaked data; heavy majority of Japanese PlayStation sales are physical still. It's tradition.

So, it would be incredibly stupid of Sony to not provide some physical disc option for that market, or many other markets, when there is demand for them. Also let's not act like physical media will become niche in two or four years to the point where Sony doesn't bother with a disc add-on when they have justified making and selling the PSVR2, a device more expensive to R&D, produce, and sell to a quite smaller customer base than an optional disc drive would have even 5 years from now.

And I say that as someone who likes & respects the PSVR2 tech, and would like to see Sony/SIE produce a scaled-down affordable VR headset included by default with the PS6. But, anyway, let's keep the thread on track. If you wanna talk about this specific PS & physical topic more we can just DM or make a new thread for it.

Imagine being an ABK developer who celebrates getting a new boss after Bobby Kotick gets sent away, just to get fired by that new boss only 2 weeks later.
Lol a company made by Bill Gates is gonna have way worse creeps than Bobby
