this is interesting to me. I remember hearing the Vita outsold the Wii U which is at 13.5 million by most sources and in 2021 a former employee at Sony claimed the Vita was around 17 million in sales. I do wish Sony would officially update their numbers on the IR page tho.
Yep. But to be a bit more specific PSP was exactly 82.52M, so PS Vita would be 11.69M until 22 July 2018.

It's worth remembering that like PS4, PS Vita got discontinued later than this date. In case of Vita March 1, 2019, so it sold a bit more than this. I'd say pretty likely somewhere around 12-14M aprox, maybe a bit more. 17M could be possible.

I hate when Sony does this stuff of merging sales of different platforms or not reporting them, I'd prefer to have more transparency.
For me, it's simple: we now officially know that :

"With PlayStation® (PS) hardware sell through surpassing 525.3 million units worldwide".

So from this, if we base ourselves on the figures which are not up to date
it works out as follows:

PS1: 102.4M
PS2: 155M
PSP: 76.4M
PS3: 87.4M
PS4: 81.2M
-------------------------------------------------
Total: 502.40 million sold [as at 22 July 2018]

And that would put the PSVita at 22.9 million, which is of course impossible (it's not even certain that the Vita has done more than the Wii U (13.56), so ~23M lol).

Now if you take the updated figures, it's obviously more logical and in line with the 525.3 million announced:

PS1: 102.49M
PS2: 160M
PSP: 82.5M
PS3: 87.4M
PS4: 81.2M
-------------------------------------------------
Total: 513.59 million sold [as at 22 July 2018]

The PSVita ends up at 11.71 million, which is much more realistic and in line with its poor performance, which we already suspected at the time.

PSV must have ended up with 13-14 million at best, more than this I don't really believe it.

Yeah thats true, the last 3 brand new Vita sold in the US was in November 2021!

So it's not impossible the Vita outsold the Wii U at 13.5 million but I feel a little sad seeing the Vita might not of cracked 15 million

My fav handheld after PSP. It was premium and I had alot of good gaming days with it.

I had high hopes for him when he was first appointed dictator of Playstation. However by 2021 / 2022 it was clear he had no vision for Playstation and was a escort for the shareholders. Had no backbone to stand up to his bosses about what PlayStation is all about and bent the knee and went all in on this PC initiative though he himself knew it was sticking a dagger into the brand.

He and his lapdog dismantled PlayStation studios and caused a bit of brain drain which we will feel for years and years to come.

He was a walking PR nightmare and I hope whomever replaces him gets proper media training. Totoki is a walking PR disaster too, so I won't hold my breath on the next CEO improving.

Good riddance Jim Ryan. Going out like a limped dog and watching your European stronghold slowly crumble under your watch... Good job... So much for him making Playstation the dominant force in Europe as many loved to claim.

Jim Ryan says PS5 is ‘well on track’ to be Sony’s most successful console ever

For this we need more high-quality exclusive games.

Because in my eyes, the PS2 is still far ahead.

Well, we know PS5 already broke many all time history records (in most cases for all companies, in a few only for Sony), like over a dozen metrics.

OH it'll be true for certain things just not cumulative sales which is obviously what I'm referring to professor Yurinka 😂

They definitely ain't topping PS2 or PS4 this generation, he's delusional.
They have a very real shot at surpassing the PS4, actually. The fact that they're almost on-pace with it after a global pandemic and the shortages that came with it is kind of amazing. (To say nothing of MS ironically paying for chip priority for their hardware.)

Good luck to them on surpassing the PS4. Jim said the PS5 was suppose to be surpass the PS4 launch aligned before 2023 ended instead they lost ground.

If they don't get their decks in order across Europe they might not even crack 110 million..

PS5 will beat them in revenue purely because live service wasn't as big back when PS4 came out. And that's all he means

But PS2 will always be the 🐐

If the game can successfully transition into F2P, it definitely has that opportunity. It'll need to really have a lot of success when it comes to transmedia and crossovers: Killzone, Destiny, Starship Troopers, other Sony IP. The game could have a very long road map.

I also think they're missing out by not having a mobile version and mac version.

Eventually the game will hit PS+ for free and eventually it'll hit F2P and they'll have to be able to successfully monetize the game from there.

When you consider how big Fortnite is, is HD2 is going to be even a substantial fraction of that, they'll need to expand and ensure content continues to flow in continuously. Arrowhead can't do that by themselves.

The only way this game can be up there with God of War, Uncharted, Gran Turismo, is if it reaches a level of success among its peers.
