Microsoft has >$100B in cash, cash equivalents, and short term investments. They can compete in any market they want without having to rely on massive acquisitions. Hell, they could open their own bank if they wanted to. The problem is that they don't know how to compete without acquisitions and patent trolling. But that's their problem, not the market's problem.
If they could they would, they can't and now they can't even buy their way into more market share. It's time to wake up to reality.

Good point. Worse yet, Microsoft may potentially be stuck fighting for the worst performing segment of their business for years with no light at the end of the tunnel of it getting better, to protect the rest of the company from being stuck in this cloud definition monopoly.
I don't understand why they just don't let go of it. Even for their cloud business it doesn't make sense, why are they worried about providing content when that was never their thing? They are clearly not suited to this type of business and they are not going to become the next PlayStation, the next Nintendo or the next Netflix.

I think it all comes down to them (just like Epic) seeing games as the opportunity to stealing Apple and Google lunch on mobile.

The funny thing is, it was Microsoft that leaned on the Cloud angle, not the CMA. They used it to defend the acquisition, and it screwed them. And I disagree, Microsoft will make acquisitions, but they won't (as no company should) be able to buy massive companies just to bolster their offering.

Microsoft is predicting an appeal could take 3 YEARS.

They're falling back to this uncertain future argument to justify this merger. If it was that easy to displace/replace COD, it would have happened by now.

Also, an appeal that takes 3 years could keep them tied up while other easier acquisition opportunities come and go.

The funny part it that the only reason MS doesn't buy big AAA exclusive games is that it doesn't make any sense for them. There are no AAA games that sell the vast majority of their copies on Xbox.
Gamepass fucked them in this regard. They have 50 million xbox owners, but they can't sell games to them as they promised everything on Gamepass day one. Hence, it's impossible to win 3rd party exclusivity deal unless developer/ publisher is desperate.
