They have to maintain the narrative that these are banger numbers for Microsoft. First they were sure the figure didn't include Core members. Then they were sure people on Twitter claiming they did were wrong. When Microsoft itself confirmed it included Core members, the narrative shifted to "well, it's just a tiny fraction, the numbers are still great!", even though they are 6 million subs away from their goal.

Remember, kids!

In a year, Sony sells only 21 million consoles (i.e. almost as many Xbox Series consoles there are) instead of 25 million = Abject, complete and utter failure.

Game Pass not only falls short of its 40 million target by 6 million, but it also loses subs = GREAT NUMBERS FOR MICROSOFT
