We can see from social media and YouTube that pc focused gamers are delighted with the state of play....with Asmongold and Rurikhan being prime examples

While PlayStation gamers are generally quite disappointed.

This is natural though when PC ports and pc releases have become more and more a focus of Sony, while new and exciting exclusives are few and far between, particularly from first party.

Sammy Barker over at Push Square wrote a piece that really hit the nail on the head for PlayStation enthusiasts

This also applies to the entire generation as a whole

New 1st party single player game announcements since 2021 - 1 (Astro Bot)

1st party PC port announcements since 2021 - 13

….

That article is great, Sony has fallen off big time. Their events are disappointments more often than not and don’t cater to console owners at all.

They clearly don’t care anymore. No matter how much they lie about PS5 still being important to them, their actions don’t show that at all. It’s not even complacency anymore at this point, it’s just blatant disregard for real PS fans.

Yeah I was disappointed. Starting to miss last gen already. By this time last gen we already e3 2016 where days gone, spiderman, god of war, detroit become human, gt sport, Death Stranding. were all announced and in 2017 we got Gravity rush 2, Horizon zero dawn, Knack 2, Gt Sport, Uncharted lost legacy and Everybody's Golf.

We have 1 (one) 1st party single player game for the 2nd year in a row, but Jim and Hermen are awesome leaders…

Or maybe they got fucked by all the live service bets they made and now have nothing to show for. It's 2024, we should have at least a trailer for Ghost of Tsushima 2, Bend's new game, and Naughty Dog's next project.

What we know though is that Sucker Punch is / was working on a Live Service game, Bend's game has a multiplayer (I assume LS as well) component, and ND only now started working on their next game, meaning we'll only see a game from them at the end of the gen.

It's pretty clear that their priority is PC now. Other than GTAVI and physical media (something that is on it's last legs) there is very little holding me back from just selling my PS5.

It is very unfortunate that R* is smart enough to delay the PC version, maybe R* should be the one with a console of their own instead of Sony.

Right now I'm just hopping the Switch 2 is powerful enough to justify ditching the PS5. By the time the games I care about are released like TLoU Pt 3, next Uncharted, etc, there will either be no delay to PC or a very short window.

I don't care about a delay when it comes to games from pretty much all Sony studios with the exception of ND and maybe SSM (Ragnarok didn't felt as special as the first game). Maybe I'm just not a big enough PlayStation fan to be fine with being taken for granted and exploited.

Since I'm not stupid I refuse to buy any multiplayer game on PlayStation and will not be buying a PS6 at all if it doesn't have free online, free cloud savings and physical media. It's not a matter of money it's a matter of having principles and not being a servile bitch.

That’s exactly what happened. The fact that live service investment overtook single player investment overnight is still insane to me. Especially with no clear plan, which led to a bunch of (easily avoidable) cancellations….Objectively bad business practices and I guarantee this decision was 100% fueled by the PC initiative since gaas is pretty much the only thing PC players seem to play.

But yeah PC has had no effect on this generation tho 🤡

In the same timeframe we were a few months away from having the reveal of Ghost of Tsushima, TLoU Pt 2 had been announced months ago and Lost Legacy was about to release.

Two new games from ND pretty much release for the PS4 instead o none even announced for the PS5.

Sony internal studios output this gen has been a complete embarrassment and yet Hermen Hulst got promoted. They did much better last gen and they didn't even have Insomniac and had far less studios.

My favorite graph, this pretty much explains everything that happened this gen. They pivot completely to GaaS. They even had ND working for multiple years on a GaaS and spent most of their acquisitions budget buying Bungie (and all that happened before they had their first massive hit in Helldivers 2).

The focus on PC is a byproduct of the focus on GaaS, PC is a key market for GaaS and these types of games do much better on PC than single player games. What do people think is going to happen when Sony port GT, Bloodborne, Demon's Souls and see them selling better than any of their single player flops?

Even the lack of Denuvo is easily explained by their focus on GaaS, why would they care about the health of single player games if they know the vast majority of their upcoming stuff is GaaS and thus pretty much immune to piracy?

Path of Exile 2 and Monster Hunter were by far the only things I remotely cared about. Both of those looked fantastic.

Silent Hill looks kinda terrible and Astrobot would’ve excited me when I was 12 (not disregarding quality but just don’t care). Until Dawn … also could care less. And Concord … yea I doubt I’ll be caring to look up that one again.

Hoping holiday 24 delivers from both third party pubs and ps. This year has been solid thus far so still a bit optimistic for the year’s end.

It won't be. It'll be PS4 Pro levels of power with basic DLSS and missing some key third-party titles, and those it does have will run at worse fidelity and worse/less stable framerates.

PS4 Pro lvl GPU with DLSS and an SSD for 1080p sounds great to me and hardly different from PS5. Half the PlayStation players still play on PS4.

There are only a few good games released every year that wouldn't run pretty well on a PS4, it's hard to even come up with an example. Many of the best looking PS5 games in HFW, GT7 and God of War Ragnarok are PS4 games.

As for most other games, what difference would it make if you were playing Fifa, Madden, Elden Ring on Switch 2 vs PS5? Even games like FFXVI and FFVII Remake could've easily been crossgen as well.

They're all 30fps which to me is just horrible in 2024. That alone would put me off, never mind the fact Switch will likely be $399 with $60 kiddie-focused games which hardly ever go on sale, and shit online.

What upsets me is that Playstation could have used this gen to make ungodly amounts of money and beat all sorts of console sales records, if only they had done this in the past few years
  • Keep their main studios focused on SP experiences ONLY
  • Increase the size and geographical location of those same studios, like having "Naughty Dog Berlin" or "Sucker Punch Warsaw" for additional output
  • Acquire / Partner with 3rd party studios to produce spin-off games based on established IP
  • Acquire / Partner with 3rd party studios to develop PS5 exclusive AA games to be released at a lower price point ($40)
  • Acquire studios to focus on Live Service offers (this has been achieved), including live service spin-offs of existing IP (instead of having Guerrilla work on a live service game, for example)
  • Use studios like Bluepoint to remaster / remake older games to be released 3 to 12 months before movies, tv shows, or sequels.
Then release as follows
  • SP AAA experiences - PS5 exclusive, 1 or 2 yearly releases
  • SP AA experiences - PS5 exclusive, 1 or 2 yearly releases
  • Remasters / Remakes - PS5 exclusive, 1 or 2 yearly releases
  • SP franchise spin-offs - PS5 / PC, 1 or 2 yearly releases
  • Live Service - PS5 / PC, 1 yearly release
This would have been possible if they hadn't nuked Japan Studio, if they had expanded their Studios properly, and if they hadn't had their main studios work on Live Service.

Edit

Imagine having Naughty Dog California, Naughty Dog Warsaw, Naughty Dog Seattle, etc... Instead of having a single studio with 400 or 500 people.

Edit 2

The reason for having "SP franchise spin-offs" as PS5 and PC would be to give those people a legitimate reason to buy a PS5 to play the mainline games. Porting mainline games just gives those people a reason NOT to buy a console.

Instead of doing that Hermen/Sony decided to:
- Pivot to GaaS.
- They stopped seeing PC and Steam as a competing platform (they even had their own studios promoting the Steam Deck).
- Prioritize the needs of the PC audience
- Buy Bungie/Haven/Firewalk
- Slow down the production of new games to instead focus on PC ports and needless remakes/remasters.
- Actively work against generating any excitement for the PlayStation.

What a stupid company, I hope they end up in the same place as Xbox but even faster.

I think they will be fine and will make money, but won't make as much money as they could have if they bet on being THE entertainment centre for your living room. They won't be, and the PS5 will sell less than the PS4. I'd be surprised if it reaches 110M sales, nevermind 117 or 120M.

Again with the Japan studios worship, if their games sold well they would not have been shut down. Even if SoTC is one the greatest games ever made it still hasn't crossed 2 million copies sold. Same with gravity rush and last guardian, these games look good on a list to show off but offer zero returns even if they are great games
