I honestly doubt that Square Enix would give marketing rights for KH4 and DQ12 to Xbox. See what with Metaphor happened: nothing. Not a single soul talks about Metaphor. They would just kill the games before launch.

It comes down to the money.

Take DQ12 for example. If I'm Square Enix, I want this on Switch, Switch 2, PS5, PC, and Xbox. If Microsoft is willing to pay a good chunk of the development cost of this game in exchange for marketing rights... by all means. Even more if they're willing to pay for it to be on GamePass.

Metaphor isn't being talked about because it isn't Persona and it isn't even SMT. It's a brand new IP and it's on Atlus more for not marketing it, not Microsoft. They put more money into marketing Persona 5 Strikers and Persona 5 Tactics.

Money is tight these days and that is why you're not going to see Sony pushing for marketing deals or exclusivity deals, especially if they're not the publisher of a game or have IP rights to a game.

Think about the development costs and marketing costs of the following games

2025
Death Stranding 2
Ghost of Yotei
Marathon
Venom
Potentially GTA6 marketing

2026
Naughty Dog game
Sony Bend game
Santa Monica new IP
Wolverine

Doesn't even cover Fairgames, Horizon Online, Horizon MMORPG.

Its crazy how xbox podcast literally dont even talk about Metaphor and its a game xbox tried to attach to.
The consistent we want JRPG only for them to get zero attention is insane

The problem is, the JFTC won’t do anything. Microsoft gets everything they want.
Where do you want to know that?
JFTC ≈ Western Antitrust authorities.
Sony and Nintendo would never approve of this. It could be that at this point all SE games come to Xbox Day1 but the Japanese authorities and government will never allow this attempt to buy them.

With gamepass, you risk players on platforms that actually buy game not buying the game or waiting till its extremely discounted because you destroy the value of the product with day 1 subscription

Everyone thought it was a cheap Atlus RPG. Again, it's not Persona or SMT and even Persona isn't a needle mover. SMT barely sells... why would they talk about this game?

Marketing deals don't really matter at the end of the day either. At least not for a game like this. I bet it'll get another ad push as a Switch 2 launch title.

If a game costs 200 million dollars to make, and Microsoft is willing to pay 150 million for it to be on GamePass... Why would they care?

If SE were to become a Xbox stooge studio, the best minds and developers would jump ship. SE's leadership is brain dead, but the people who make the games aren't. We've already seen this story.

Spoiler, they already jumped ship, but they're not making great independent RPGs either.

Square and Enix both had a level of magic to them from the 80s to the early 2000s, but they became extremely corporate minded and entirely too focused on a set of IP (FF, DQ, and KH). They've focused on craven deals to keep them going too, but these deals haven't made their games better.

They haven't made a great game in a very long time. Meanwhile, Atlus is eating their lunch. There is more hype for RPGs coming from outside of the two combined juggernauts than within...

Fault of Sony tbh. If they would just stop being a cheap ass and pouring PlayStation earned money in wrong places. If they have bought Square Enix, We wouldn't have to deal with this headaches.

It's hilarious seeing someone say Sony pours money in the wrong places and suggesting Square Enix is the right place.

Their stock was trading for 33 dollars a share in 2021 and is now trading for 17.86...

Square enix is a train wreck...

So are Bungie, Firewalk and Haven. With this money an acquisition of Square Enix would have been way more worthy for Sony's money. The worst buys in Sony history.

Bungie - Halo, massive success. Destiny, massive success. Destiny 2, massive success.
Firewalk - Startup studio
Haven - Start up studio

How much did they buy Firewalk and Haven for? You have no idea, because no one knows.

Square Enix would have cost significantly more than Bungie and wouldn't have given them anything they don't have today.
