thats the issue

no point in wasting chump change on a game for years if its not gonna result in "x" sales. big publishers would rather scale up a team to 100+ people and make bigger bets in search of bigger results.
A small team only makes sense if you have a big name behind them and someone like that will probably just stay independent at this point unless they want to scale things up.

16 not counting Xdev and support studios or the one mobile studio, yet some claim Xbox needs 50 studios to keep up with them.
That's enough to average 3 games a year with 5 years development cycle. There is still some room for Sony to grow but at this point quality matters way more than quantity. That is why FromSoftware and other studios like Remedy are so appealing.

Was just posted on their Twitter. IIRC, weren't they working on a new AAA action-adventure game for PS5 tied in to a film?

Anyone have an idea what's going on here? I was really looking forward to seeing what that game would be.

I don't think they had enough staff to do a AAA game.

From some reports they were working with a Collab Animation studio. I believe that studio was Ember Labs who is primarily a animation studio who shipped Kena.

I wonder if Ember took project over.

15 + Bungie

17 if you count Media Molecule
18 if you count that mobile game team they bought
19 if you count Valkyrie (they seem to be hiring for a mobile game, they made guns up)

15 + Bungie so....

MM wont have anything for years and is tiny.

You didn't include Nixxes I hope... that's what shoulda been closed down.

It's not really that many teams.

Why wouldn't Media Molecule count?

2008 Little Big Planet - 95
2009 Little Big Planet PSP - 87
2011 Little Big Planet 2 - 91
2013 Tearaway - 87
2015 Tearaway Unfolded - 81
2020 Dreams - 89

That is an extremely accomplished studio and they aren't even that big.

Valkyrie is a support studio. They help other devs make 3d models and levels.

My count was 16+ Bungie and that includes Media Molecule. Fabrik games is part of firesprite so I didn't count them.

RIP. Hopefully the staff landed well on their feet considering how big of a footprint SIE studios have now.

This is how you do it Phil. No mercy. Cull the weak. Fuck failure
Welcome, dear GAF refugee.

*edit* on-topic: would love to see what they were working on. Concrete genie wasn't bad, but it shouldn't take that long to come out with a new game.

Absolutely disgusting.
I hope all that gaas garbage they are cooking is worth it

Talk about a hot take.

Their last game was 2019, it didn't sell at all, Entwined sucked, and the new game they were making on collab with Sony animation studio did not pan out after getting a budget in 2021.

But yea lets keep working on something thats not working out?

You want a redfall situation?

Intervening early is part of the process. Sony does it a lot. It pisses a lot of people off in the industry, but it is what it is.

It's a business.
