Talk about a hot take.

Their last game was 2019, it didn't sell at all, Entwined sucked, and the new game they were making on collab with Sony animation studio did not pan out after getting a budget in 2021.

But yea lets keep working on something thats not working out?

You want a redfall situation?

Intervening early is part of the process. Sony does it a lot. It pisses a lot of people off in the industry, but it is what it is.

It's a business.
Yep, it sucks that the studio is closing and I hope that those affected find something else very soon, but to act like the sky is falling is pretty silly.

Notice how the common denominator is the closed studios either hadn't released anything worthwhile or released a flop. I think MM'S next game needs to be Little big planet status or they'll be closed too.

Playstation likes their studios to release games, while Xbox would've let these devs coast by for an entire generation.

I don't think Sony will close MM for as long as Siobhan Reddy is there. It's prestigious studios, lead by a woman, pretty small and had plenty of success over the years.

Sony would not have closed Japan Studio if Fumito Ueda was still there making games for them.

What? I didn't see this coming. Since the Concrete Genie release around 3 years and a half ago they were making an Unreal Engine game in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animations, a type of collaboration that Sony is engaging corporation wise between divisions.

Losing Japan studio still hurts. I hope Sony realizes they need more studios in Japan some day because Asobi and Polyphony aren't enough. We need more variety in genres like rpgs and horror.

They didn't shut down Japan Studio, they restructured it changing its management and splitting its two parts into two separate offices, putting its 2nd party publishing part to report to their global 2nd party publishing team, as did before in Europe and USA.

All Media Molecule games have been profitable, got great reviews and won a ton of awards. They are also pretty small and many of their members are juniors/trainees straight from the University or from their game communities. I think they won't shut them down, and least in the next few years.

The closed studios were unprofitable ones, the ones who mostly released games with poor sales and reviews. Not the case of Media Molecule.

In fact now that Sony is also betting hard on GaaS in addition to also increasing their bet in non-GaaS game, LBP was -with PS Home- their first GaaS hit. And was a game that influenced even Nintendo.

Also, Pixelopus was working since 3 years and half ago in their current project, nothing too big or expensive specially because it was a pretty small team.

Who?

Edit - I have no ideia it was even a Sony Studio… if you don’t delivery games then what are you doing?

Better get the talented guys and merge them in others PS Studio that are better organized.

A Studio needs to have ambition, management and delivery.

And this is why I dont like Jim or Herman.
They get praise for PS5’s selling ( really nothing to do with them, the momentum from PS4 was gonna happen anwway)

Closes Japan Studios and now this.

I love the smaller games from PS, its what makes PS special. Having both the AAA games and the smaller games.
I loved there games :(

Bend I wouldnt be surprised closing if they make another medicore game like Days Gone that costs alot of money, but Pixel Opus was a small studio.

What a shame, we need need more variety, more studios and variety from PS :(

Is Team Gravity still with PS? Tsutomu Kouno? Yohei Kataoka?

Throughout the years, they‘ve killed off Japan Studios, now there is only Asobi and Xdev? Japan studios was more than just Xdev and Asobi, so they have gotten rid of alot more than just 2 studios. It was more than just a reconstruction.

Japan studios should of stayed, the logo too lol. Ueda should of stayed too. The guy makes masterpieces, even if he’s hard to work with, it wasn’t his fault PS3 dev kit was ass to work with.

Id rather fuck off Bend than Japan studios and Pixel Opus
