I doubt it, they actually want to succeed.

Jim Ryan is a disaster... he wants to fill his pockets and fuck the company in the long term, he obviously doesn't care about console gaming.
He talks bullshit about hundreds of millions playing their games and then he does this.... he is pure scum, he needs to be out.
And what about Jim Ryan? Stop accusing Jim Ryan of all mortal sins.
Even at the time of the report, their chief financial officer evaded questions about the price increase, because they had already made this decision.
And the decision is made from above. Jim Ryan is just the one who voices him.

I understand that you really don't like the PC release policy, but that's not going to change.
You can scream all you want, but nothing will change.

Only the market and money decide what will and what will not happen.

yes! somebody talking with common sense and not emotions!
This Jim Ryan hate is getting really really weird!

I feel like too many people here who just want to hate on Jim Ryan just don't want to hear the truth no matter how many times you tell them!

There's really 2 things here:
- Cost of parts has gone up
- Xbox is sitting on shelves even the cheap ass XSS in much of the world
- Easy way to get revenue up for the year

In the USA, where Xbox is a bit more competitive? No price hike. Not shocking.

XSS is easy to get in the US, but contrary to a lot of beliefs.. it does sell.. I check my "Targets w/i 50 miles" for XSS every once in a while and it sells out or goes low stock at stores.. super easy to find, but the machines are moving you can tell by the "only X left" numbers changing.

US didn't have the hike because it doesn't need it... actually with how strong the dollar become it should have a price cut in US but I don't know how user could get that at the same that EU prices increased.

Exchange rates is additional reason for increase.
That is the PS5 price situation after the price increase... US is still the place Sony got more for the sale.

Most of Europe: $459
Britain: $471
USA PS5 Disc Edition: $499

US needs a drop in price around 5-7% to reach EU levels after the increase.

Sony trades in Yen though don't they?

Like they are always noting in financials the fluctuations of the yen, not USD.

Not sure where you are getting your conversions from though.

Euro and USD are equal.. so a $550 euro sale is bringing in more than a $500 USD sale.

But it is true of course the USD is strong.. Euro to USD only a few months ago was like 1.3:1 IIRC

US price is the base... it doesn't include the tax.
EU prices are full... it does include government tax.

550 Euros in Europe bring around $459 to Sony (after the price increase).
500 dollar in US brings well 500 dollar to Sony.

When Euro was stronger than Dollar it was a non-issue for Sony because even removing VAT Europeans was paying more to PS5 than US but now US pays more than EU with the 1:1 ratio.

Demand and inflation must be through the fucking roof for sie.

Gotta give Jim credit, the guy does what HE wants to do, and whatever he needs to do to position the brand towards profits which they will need considering they are competing against a trillion dollar company that can give 2 shits about money.

Have to respect that type of leadership.

To a limit.

It's just so odd to me that they're increasing the price. Was not the introduction of PS+ Extra and Premium meant to help generate more revenue from the userbase, and maybe to also appeal to gain new subscribers? Was not the increase in games to $70 meant as well, to generate additional revenue from the userbase?

Their digital sales ratio has increased significantly and Sony retains 100% of the revenue from 1P sales digitally, and a bigger cut from 3P digital sales. These are things that are supposed to offset the losses usually taken on console sales, so what's going on? I think pursuing more bundles, maybe with some choice 3P games, would've been the much smarter option.

Basically, take what Microsoft are doing with Series S promotions ATM (if you buy a Series S in certain markets you get to choose from various games to include for free, one of them is Elden Ring) and do that with PS5. Increase the ratio of bundles even further if you feel you have to.

Typically you drop bad news at the end of the day on Friday, and drop some good news to soften the blow. Its weird how they decided to drop this thursday morning in the middle of gamescom.

This. They've always managed to deliver bad news well by having some good news to go with it. Not the case this time. Do they think a new DualSense controller is enough to ease the disappointment and frustration many (well, not us in America, we got off easy) are going to feel hearing this news?

Some strong "we're raising the cost of Xbox Live Gold by 100%" vibes here. In that scenario, MS were forced to walk it back, they had to figure some other ways to generate extra revenue from Xbox. There are surely alternatives for Sony outside of these price hikes, but those alternatives require more work, and these companies always want to take the easiest option first.

It will still sell out no doubt

Hmm...maybe. You very well could have a portion of would-be customers in non-American markets who were set on buying one this year, seeing this increase, adding that on top of any subscriptions and games they'd need to buy, weighing the rise in utilities, food, rent etc. and just deciding maybe they don't need a PS5 in the meantime after all.

I don't know how big that slice of customers is going to be; it's probably a rather small one in all honesty. Still though the optics of the announcement aren't great, not helped by the fact there was nothing else announced simultaneously to deflect away from it.

Its funny when he was in president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe, that part of PlayStation was the most competitive as PS3 lost to 360 and Wii in North America and to the Wii in Japan. So a comeback would of been the hardest for him because he probably wouldn't of got Sony in the trouble they were in during the 7th gen in the first place
Sony of Europe thrived in spite of him. He was in a position where all he had to was sign on whatever any department asked, and sit on it then go to Gamescom preaching "no complacency".

Now that he has real power, his incompetence really shines through.

This is a pretty bad move, it makes something which is already hard to get now even more unaffordable at a time when people are pinching every single penny.
It's an item that has demand outstripping supply. It's not a "bad move" unless it results in dropped sales (which it likely won't). They are still going to sell out everything they make.

Prices are seeing insane increases across the board lately. You didn't expect this to affect our little hobby here?

BTW the elephant in the room.

PSVR2 price.

It cost will be way higher than PS5 and Sony will need to heavy subsidie it.
But to what extend? What is the middle term to Sony in subsidize and loses in each unit?

US will probably will have a more reasonable price? But other countries? I have the impression that in most countries PSVR2 will be more expensive than PS5.
Psvr2 doesn’t need to be Uber expensive. Let’s examine…

2 x controllers same tech as DSense
Headset with OLED + Cameras
Budget audio buds

No battery in headset, no cpu in headset - all processing offloaded to the ps5.

1/3 the price of Quest, 1/2 at most?

His "Complacency" helped getting Europe the biggest market for the PS2 as he was one of the heads they flew to Japan to have a meeting with Ken in 2001. His Complacency got us our first ever free pack in with astros playroom with a playstation console. It also got us real next gen exclusives like Demons Souls Remake, Ratchet, and Returnal all during a pandemic after giving us one of the greatest send offs for a console with the PS4 with Dreams, FF7 Remake, TLOU 2, GOT, Sackboy, Miles Morales, and Iron Man VR.
The PS5 is also the first time since 2006 where a console launched in a year with record profits (Last time was nintendo's Fiscal year 2006 when the Wii Launched and DS lites were selling great and let to nintendo having the best profits they ever had up to that point.)
I would say Sony handled the pandemic way better than their direct competitors.
