This sounds like frame generation to me. Maybe system-level AFMF or in-game / in-engine implementation.
Looks like it won't be ready at launch in Q4 2024, though.


Personally I think PS5 Pro with be fabbed on TSMC N5.

It's most probably N6 and it doesn't look like they'd need to use N5/N4 until it's cheap enough.

Teraflops are not a good metric, they don't remain the same from one gen to the next of AMD tech. But the reason people are trying to downplay the figures is due to fear and they should be fearful because when this console launches, it becomes the best place to playthe biggest releases, with the most optimized games and many fully exclusive games...importantly GTA6.

It may not show the performance of 33 or more teraflops in every situation but don't be under any illusion, it will be a very noticeable step up... some people hype up GPU releases that come annually while trying to undermine this OPTIONAL upgrade that comes after 4 years.

I think there should be upgrades every 2-3 years for PlayStation TBH.
Nobody is fearful of an RDNA GPU that is 33 teraflops dual duty. That equates to basically what would be a 7700, that's a mid-range GPU in a hardware generation that's about to be on its way out.

I don't think it will.

Between PS5 N7 and PS5 N6 they reduced the die size from 300mm^2 to 260mm^2 (13% smaller).

Now for the PS5 Pro the CPU clusters, the memory PHYs and controller, the uncore, etc. are staying almost exactly the same. All they're meddling with is the GPU.

That means they're only increasing the parts in green (WGPs and TMUs) and blue at the center (ROPs, L2) as everything else stays untouched.

A quick pixel count will tell us the iGPU portion is taking around 47% of the whole chip.

So even if they make the new GPU say 80% larger (probably lower than that IMO), we're looking at a chip that is 37.5% larger. Using the new N6 SoC as base, we're getting a PS5 Pro SoC that is ~357mm^2.

That's actually smaller than the Xbox Series X SoC that sold for $500 back in 2020, on N7 whose wafers were more expensive per then, than N6's wafers are right now.

Full SoC: 3467500
GPU: 1625782
SoC non-GPU: 1841718
New GPU = GPUx1.8: 2926408
Full with new GPU: 4768126
Full new / Full old: 1.375

Please write out acronyms lol some ppl will not know what you are referring to. For ppl tht don't know AFMF is..

AMD Fluid Motion Frames

To put it simply, AFMF adds frame generation technology to boost FPS outside of the game's engine. Often the results double the FPS of the game because it works at the driver level instead of the game/software level.

Only if the PS5's SDK already has a clear definition over what elements are UI and what is rendering within the framebuffer, otherwise we'll probably be getting fuzzy UI elements like we currently do on AFMF.

Appreciate you and the knowledge you bring. I love to hear PC talk because it tends to give an insight to what can come to consoles in future hardware albeit with some console modifications and sometimes surprises :)

On paper. But with optimization and the fact that a console doesn't have windows and other programs weighing it down... it will of course perform far above an equivalent GPU in a PC setup...other things being equal.

I think it will be great and there really is no other option to enjoy GTA6 or the latest PS exclusives etc.

The most common gpus on steam surveys are 3060s bud. Pcmr about to get a cold shower yet again.
Yeah and while that might be true what is the percentage of GPU's above that? It's about 45%.

I'll admit it was a good try but you should have at least looked into the data before you got cocky.
