It doesn't need to be a sales monster but it does need to sell, and if they try to sell a +700€ console in the middle of a recession and in the year after they miss their console sales target, they'll barely sell any console at all.

Why can't people understand this.
Again, base PS5 is how they will hit their sales targets, it's on sale right now infact. The Pro will be positioned as a premium product with a decent margin built in like PSVR/PSVR2, Dualsense Edge, and PlayStation Portal. You release a cheaper consoles to focus on sales like Series S, you dont focus on sales with the more expensive premium version of the same product. Makes absolutely no sense from a sales and marketing prospective.

from when the Choice is a bad thing? you don't like, okey, they are not targeting you then with PS5 PRO. PRO is for enthusiasts not cusuals.

In testing that basically amounts to dick, it's for a lack of better words marketing fluff to offset teraflops to a higher figure.
Getting developers to adopt AMD's instructions that are compatible with dual-issue should happen much more often in the walled garden that is console development.
It's obviously never going to behave like a 2x RDNA2 GPU because there's no doubling of registers, caches, bandwidth, schedulers, etc. but it still might amount to considerably higher average performance.

If it's "just" 25% higher performance it's still a massive win considering how little amount of transistors AMD spent on dual-issue FP32 compared to RDNA2.


Which again makes it marketing jazz, the reality is still the lesser figure in practice.

Remember Rapid Packed Math from AMD? Yeah, same level of nonsense.
Rapid Packet Math was far from nonsense and pretty much allowed for free linear upscaling like FSR1.
That's why the old Polaris cards would barely get any performance uplift from using it, for example.


Whats the jump in power and efficiency from rdna 2 to 3? Like 30%
Unfortunately it's almost none, but mostly because AMD's RDNA3 implementation on TSMC N5 was bugged and the power/clock curves were similar if not worse than RDNA2 on N7.
As weird as it sounds, the Navi 33 made on the older N6 gets much higher clocks than Navi 31 and 32 on N5.

Again, PS5 Pro still needs to sell some units to justify the investment into a new hardware platform and the software dev efforts to implement its optimizations (heavier raytracing, PSSR, etc.).

If the PS5 Pro sells less than e.g. 500k units worldwide, then it's absolutely a disaster for Sony, regardless of how much money they're making per console (which Sony never did with any new console launch, so that was a failed prediction from the start anyways).

It could cost $1000 and still sell to 10% of the base and that's millions. Sony are focusing on margins did you not read their latest financial reports?

It wouldn't get anywhere near 10% if it's $1000.
They're focusing on lowering the costs of videogame development, not on making more money per console sold.

PS5 slim got an 80 quid discount this week. Something tells me this leak wasn't a leak and just marketing.

£650 is my prediction for the pro.

Doesn't matter if we "all" know it's mostly for the hardcore, it will not sell for more than around $600.00 anything more than that would make potential sales fall off a cliff. They don't expect to sell a gazillion but they expect decent sales and to invigorate their sales and margins.

Why even bother with a pro at all then? Makes no sense to sell a more expensive version of the PS5 as an option if profit is not the reason.

It's not marketing jazz. If you actually write the code for it, that's how it performs. It's not AMDs fault that engines aren't rewritten to take advantage of it.

A PS5 Pro with these spec for $700 would still be great value.

As for the specs themselves, PS5 punched above it's weight compared to the Xbox Series X that had bigger of teraflops as well as a bunch of buzzwords that never amounted to anything. If Mark Cerny is behind this one it's pretty much guaranteed that it's going to be another well designed console.

Tbf everyone panned the 40xx series except for the 4090, which is actually a terrible value but no one cares because it's ridiculously powerful

I just don't know where this notion comes from that a GPU alone can cost north of $1500 and be praised for it while a console costing $700 is somehow insulting.

All to end up playing the same games in conditions looking close to identical to most people and in most conditions.

It's not like some dude playing Helldivers 2 in a RTX 4060 is playing a completely different game from someone playing it on a RTX 4090 that is 5 times more expensive.

Anyone that doesn't see the value of the PS5 Pro can simply stick to the base PS5 and be fine.

449 USD base PS5 Disc
599 USD PS5 Pro with Disc to keep BOM high.

Bet they won't bother making a Digital version for the Pro
