Why does having or not having ambient occlusion matter? The game is not gorgeous by any stretch of the imagination, it just isn't. The lighting is not great, it's decent enough. Textures are great in some places, not all - New atlantis comes to mind as a place where some sections look great, while others look Fallout 4 levels of bad. And no, I'm not comparing its colours to HFW, I'm comparing graphical quality. HFW has much better lod and above all, is much more consistent.
The opening few hours are good (not jaw dropping... seems like they put more effort here) but after that the quality drops a lot.
And some places remember PS360 graphics level.
Think you can put this into starfield review thread man too many starfield thread recently been avoiding starfield thread like a plague but cant help if new one keep coming up
This statement shows your ignorance actually. Ambient occlusion is one of the most important things in lighting. It's not something that games can do without.
For example, here is RE4 without AO on EVERYTHING like I mentioned.. The wooden planks need to cast shadow on the wall and it doesn't. I can find this all over HFW as well (we all know HFW doesn't have a good lighting model).
Inside your ship, which is a very small linear section where most objects are baked into the scene. Amazing. And there's objects in the scene whereby either AO is missing, or it's just casting a shadow in the wrong direction. Impressive how such a respectful veteran like you missed this.
Here, 14:20, what impressive light looks like in an open world game that is consistent visually.
This is what I'm saying. I'm enjoying the game so far. They used a lot of Expanse designs in the game from what I can tell. Also, the quests are what take you across the galaxy. I would have never hyped the game up to be a free-roaming scifi like Bethsoft did because it's really just an open world RPG that isn't going to be entertaining unless you follow and go specifically where the quests take you.
I just can't get over these videos of the graphcis because what I'm playing (MAX settings) it's a gorgeous game. They have ambient occlusion on everything -- and I mean EVERYTHING! Something most games just don't have
I am sure there are some nice sections, Neon in my eyes looks particularly lovely but I really don't see a lot of things in videos that make me think god damn that's a stunner.

I didn't mean to single out those games as bad or anything, I personally am quite divided on the first Remnant and choose to skip the sequel. They were singled out for being the biggest releases at that particular time.
