Square Enix has two main problems. The first is communication with their fans, particularly regarding their product naming, which is as confusing as the story of FF7. They should make it simple.
If you announce that the FF7 remake will have three parts why name the subsequent episodes something nonsensical?
- FF7 Remake (Part 1)
- FF7 Intergrade (Part 1 with DLC)
- FF7 Rebirth (Part 2)
They often release spin-offs that can be completely different genres of games but with similar names.
Keep it simple. Most people have lives to live and won't watch a 10-minute explanation from the director in Japanese about the game.
Name it "FF7 Remake Episode <number>" simple. Now consumers actually understand when Part 2 has been released. By the way, did you know they made a prequel that explains FF7 called Crisis Core? They remade that game with the FF7 Remake engine and assets and brilliantly called it Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion. Just call it "FF7 Remake Prequel." Now they are going to release Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion episodes. Why? Its so confusing, you cant even google it anymore.
So, naming their products and communicating with audiences who aren't heavily invested in gaming has been very difficult for them. It's too complicated and honestly no one cares.
The second issue is that they should keep making the games that made them successful - those were really complex, with deep lore. FF16 had zero depth, no items, no game within a game, no cool mechanics, and no weird side quests to be found.
They should make games for their core audience, not for the general public. The general public will adopt difficult games look at Elden Ring.
So, better naming of their products and a focus on more hardcore games is needed.
FF8 was really complicated, yet that's what gave it staying power. There are still lore videos being made on Youyube with millions of views about that game. No one will make such videos for a simple, easy to complete jrpg games.
Create games with deep lore, deep mechanics and be brave.
