About the OT.

Steam today is just a 3rd-party store front... they don't focus in software anymore.

Sony already do what Steam does.
So Sony market, goals and mission are way bigger than what Steam is.
They are not comparable.

What do you mean by "Nintendo is relegated"? Is that supposed to mean they won't pose a threat to PlayStation going forward? Just because they aren't a "direct competitor" the way Xbox has been, means they can be ignored. In fact, if the Switch 2 is capable enough to get 3P AAA games the way Switch wasn't necessarily conductive of, Sony can kiss a lot of defacto 3P console exclusives goodbye.

Devs & pubs will go out of their way to bring those games to Switch 2, either with scaled-down ports or, I suppose, a combination of that & cloud streaming for visual enhancements/supplements similar to games like Flight Simulator on PC for streaming in textures real-time. Meanwhile you've got Nintendo's 1P developing the next big Mario, next big Zelda, next big Smash Bros. etc. which will all bring a lot of innovations and all-around fun.

Xbox as a console is dying, yes. But if the next generation of Xbox systems are the rumored PC-like mini PCs/NUCs, handhelds (maybe a hybrid with an eGPU-equipped dock) etc. running a custom Windows environment (with Xbox UI) with emulators for OG Xbox/360/Series but also able to run the regular Windows environment...that will ironically give Xbox hardware a new lease on life. They won't be doing 360 numbers, in fact they might land anywhere between Wii U and Series numbers. But for what those new Xbox devices would be, those would be great numbers and they'd be making a good profit on each device sold since it wouldn't be sold at a loss/subsidization.

Also ironically, if Sony gets more aggressive with their PC strategy to do a launcher/storefront as well as Day 1 for all their games to PC, that actually gives a lot of value proposition to those Xbox devices. Sony can try making their games on PC exclusive to their own storefront, but that's not going to be an easy battle to win nor cheap, just ask Epic. So they could be in a position of losing tons of money on PC by trying that tactic, and losing console sales because of their own launcher & Day 1 on PC. The latter won't just occur with some hardcore/core enthusiasts; there is a knock-on effect where that will also affect other customer types, even if the total number of hardcore/core enthusiasts who drop the console to go PC is somewhat small (say 3 million).

The only way Sony could genuinely compete with Steam would be to scale back their PC port strategy for the remainder of the gen, keep most of their AAA & AA as genuine exclusives, and add features to the PS5 experience that are currently lacking but are present on Steam, like transparent engagement numbers tracking (CCUs, peak players, player loads by timezone etc.), more fully open mod support, integrated forum communities, a better refund policy, better integrated streaming/multi-streaming & multi-simultaneous application runs (these last two are more in bringing some additional PC-like functionality where it would make sense). Also things like adding streaming of PCVR games to PSVR2 for console PSVR2 owners, etc.

However, many of those things would require effort, money and time, and I just don't think the current leadership at SIE are interested in doing things beyond the bare minimum when it comes to "growth". If I'm wrong though, I'd be glad to be so. But at this point and going forward, I have serious doubts.

I think Steam dies some time after Gabe does because it will change DRM policies and it will be mishandled/sold, it may take years... But it will happen

Sony as they are now is not taking anyone's lunch (xbox killed itself).

In the end, I don't think Sony considers this kind of ting, they are just not in a position to do it. Maybe if they made the PS systems so attractive as gaming devices at all levels (prices, modding, compatibility, etc.) but this is not gonna happen.

Nope, Valve is a private company and his son will inherit it. So Steam is safe from the leeches for a long time
I like my odds against a "safe" claim. Gabe and his "son" have a price.

Say Gabe holds out. Chances his son does not are quite high. Historically speaking. What's 5 billion to 10billion or 15 billion or 20 billion? Is the son a "businessman"? Maybe he's into flying planes, driving cars, a scientist etc.... Definitely no absolute certainty. We do know Steam fanboys panic at the idea of some other company acquiring Steam and "ruining" it - in essence devaluing or destroying their library, and part of the personal identity that goes with it. Natural of course. Usually that fear is the source from where the absolute denials of a possibility of Steam being sold arise - and so all the narratives of Gabe being the white knight.

DNA test. Just taking the piss really....but you gotta always keep it to the back of your mind that the man enjoys the company of ladies of the night. With those peaches, anything is possible.

Yes. Sony is the market leader in consoles, and now keeps growing on PC:

In FY22 was the top 20 publisher on PC/Steam, pretty likely will be higher in FY23 specially thanks to Helldivers 2, which will continue pushing beyond in FY24 also with the help of Concord, and later Marathon or Horizon Online. Plus obviously more refurbished ports of old games.

In a handful years Sony will be one of the top -if not the top- publisher on PC/Steam.

They slowly keep integrating PS stuff in PC. The next one, once they have enough PC titles, would be adding their own PSN PC store. Plus adding PS-PC cross-save, pretty likely via the PS+ feature cloud saves to add extra anti-cheat/anti-hack security.

At some point they'll release their own PC store not only to avoid paying the Valve/Epic/etc. cut at least for part of the Sony games copies sold (I think that if in the long term the PC PSN ends being successful enough they'd stop selling their titles in Steam/Epic/etc), but also to get their cut from 3rd party games sold there.

Sony could also use this same PC PSN store for their own PC handheld, which would compete against Nintendo and the other PC handhelds. This time, unlike Vita 3rd parties and Sony wouldn't need to make specific games or ports for it: it would already run the PC titles, and if crossbuy with PS implemented, also the game you bought on the PS home console. Plus PS cloud gaming and remote play, acting as PS Portal successor. And if they also implement "Other OS" as in the early PS3s, then you'd be able to install here Windows or SteamOS to add emulators and games from the other stores and cloud platforms.

Gabe is already worth over 5 billion, maybe even more, he's the richest individual person in gaming. No one can offer them anything lmao, and why did you put son in quotes? 😂😂
Also Valve is in a unique position there private so they don’t have to do any bs expansion that can sabotage there company like Xbox & PS. Valve is also the defacto storefront in PC gaming & they’ve ensured themselves they will be here in the long run w Steamdeck which is there own hybrid handheld that’s essentially a pc on the go. They’ve essentially have to do little to no work & count billions in profit for internity.

I mean look at it now Valve has there own platform w Steamdeck & there own storefront w Steam & now has Xbox & PS games by doing nothing just existing.

Sony would pull their titles from steam in this scenario - steam loses those, the Sony PC storefront gains all the third party support of their consoles and Sony now gets to milk PC players for coin.

And yes, Nintendo has been relegated, and no, their console will not be powerful enough to garner sustained AAA support for the duration of a generation.

That's not going to happen. 3rd party won't drop support for millions of Steam users to support only a handful on another storefront.
They don't have to drop support. Sony will drop support for Steam, others can support both storefronts. In direct competition, outside of handhelds, Sony has never lost.

HAH nice joke.
Dude I really want Sony to have a fantastic PC presence but that's never gonna happen. Just look at how PC nerds react to the Epic Games Store. they fucking hate it.
Steam already does almost everything perfectly and there is 0 reason to go against them. Its a fight no one can win SPECIALLY Playstation

PlayStation in the console arena is an opponent no one can beat. Steam on PC is the little leagues in comparison. The revenue earned by the respective platform holders and the markets are incomparably tilted in PlayStation's favour and Sony can use that to pry open the market. Remember, unlike Microsoft, all of this was earned by the business unit in the market they're competing in.

This is a dangerous attitude

No one is immune and no one is undefeatable, the market is very dynamic and can always change

Remember when ps3 cought by surprised by xbox 360

Also steam is very popular on pc
I think you meant to quote this guy?

History already showed us dozen of times that a son can't take what the father did...
I can be wrong but in most cases they fuck up the legacy.
And imo that is reason Gabe don't want to retire because he knows...
