Probably the Series S demand was too much work. Maybe they will do what Larian did and demand Xbox do the work to port to a last gen system. I doubt Sony fought for exclusivity.
Sony tried to get them under the china hero project umbrella but were rejected as the devs wanted it to be multiplatform, anyways PC is the lead platform for this game so not much playstation can do about it
Still could be true about the sacrifice to make a Series S version.

They had customers who bought the Xbone and Series X/S when they did fuck all for years. After a while even they give the fuck up.
They conditioned their remaining customers to not buy games but to "wait for Gamepass
