I hope Sony makes something new and not just more sequels. More Spider-Man, more last of us, more Horizon, more god of war …

Don’t get me wrong the games are good but there was a time not long ago when these games were completely new and fresh.

We need more of that. Across the entire industry.

I mean, it would also be ridiculous for their biggest games last generation to not get follow ups and a chance to refine themselves into something bigger and better. Thats the problem with new IP’s they start out fresh and interesting but they sometimes lack the scope and variety of older franchises. Like imagine where uncharted would be if it stopped at one.

And sony is trying to build valuable cross-media IP. you need to establish the games as franchises in order to do that. Thats why Hermen Hulst said half their games in production are new IP.

Insomniac is doing wolverine which is a new game IP for them
Santa Monica/barlog is doing a new IP, they dont really have anything else but god of war to work on otherwise
Naughty Dog are most likely working on a new IP
Pixelopus very likely
Bluepoint is working on one
Housemarques new game is a new IP
Firesprites game is New IP
Deviations game is a new IP
Havens game new IP
Bend Studios is working on a new IP
Media Molecule is hiring for something new
Team Asobi its 50/50 but even if its astrobot its a new kind of astrobot game
Firewalk have multiple games in production including the horror game
Sumo Digital is working on a new IP
Ballistic Moon is working on a new IP

I’d say we know for a fact the majority of playstation studios are working on new IP.

I think the only ones we can say for sure are probably working on sequels are Suckerpunch and insomniac

Oh yeah, I don’t think sequels are all bad. I love me some Zelda. I just want to see some new stuff, and I know it’s coming at some point.

Well hopefully more than TLOU Factions 2 and Spiderman 2 from the 1st party on PS5, otherwise thats gonna be not so great.
Multiplats and VR isn’t the same as having GT7, Horizon 2, TLOU Remake and GOWR.

FF16 and Forspoken is great but Im talking 1st Party PS5 exclusives Sony need to show more/do more
FF16 and Forspoken will be treated like exclusives. We know Forspoken will be exclusive until 2025 and it's not guaranteed to get ported then (see Final Fantasy 7 remake)

Yo, I’m not even convinced they don’t have anything for November/December.

Sony is doing the Nintendo thing now. Not showing anything really with surprise virtual events on a game to game basis shortly before release.

I know everyone misses the hype shows but they no longer need to have these shows. Would you prefer seeing a bunch of fake game trailers like Infinite’s reveal and vaporware like Everwild like an Xbox showcase? And then wait for another two years for no games??

Sony’s branding has reached new heights. The PlayStation name alone will sell these games.

I’ll be eating great post GoW come Lightfall’s release in February.

Fanboys are mistakenly shook into thinking GoW is the peak. Nah, it’s just the beginning.

Halo shit the bed and killed any momentum Xbox and Gamespass had. It happens (when you’re a talentless cover band).

They can have Activision. They need it. It won’t be anything that wasn’t available before m. So in fact, it’s not Xbox has no games… it has even LESS than before.

100 billion spent and nothing to show for it. Phil Spencer is a huge failure and snake oil salesman

I dont think Spiderman 2 is a 90+ game unless they blow us away with some stuff never done before
I think Spider-man 2 will be Insomniac's magnum opus, they have a great foundation with Venom, a darker story, they make good combat and they make good set pieces

Spider-Man 2 will be a 90+ metacrtic easily. Even if I don’t like it, which I couldn’t be bothered to play the first game or its standalone expansion with Miles Morales.

I do believe that both Nintendo and Sony have a huge contingent of fanboys that inflate the fuck out of some of these game scores. And then add marvel and Disney shills to the mix for that one…

With that said, I believe with every gamer bone in my body that Ragnarok will be the greatest fantasy action adventure game to date.

First party wise, im expecting Horizon Forbidden West expansion (which I wish would be standalone), TLOU Factions, Lost Soul Aside, Stellar Blade, Helldivers 2 and Spider Man 2. Including third party deals, there's Forspoken and Final Fantasy XVI to fill out the gaps. And of course PSVR 2.

Barring any delays, they have plenty. Some of which im expecting to get revealed at The Game Awards.
Man.....is Lost Soul Aside ever coming out? We've been waiting since 2016.

As far as I remember (pretty likely I forget many more) they already have announced a good amount of 2023 exclusives of different types:
  • Tchia
  • Forspoken
  • Street Fighter 6 (exclusive in previous gen)
  • RE4R (exclusive in previous gen, VR stuff)
  • RE Village (VR stuff)
  • Among Us (VR stuff)
  • No Man's Sky (VR stuff)
  • Horizon CoM
  • Firewall Ultra
  • Destiny 2 Lightfall (multi)
  • MLB 23 (multi)
  • FFXVI
  • Spider-Man 2
  • FFVII Rebirth
  • Stellar Blade
  • KOTOR remake?
  • TLOU online?
Nintendo will have Zelda, and MS will have Skyrim or Forza. But I think that like every year Sony will have a bigger and more diverse amount of cool exclusives or 1st party stuff. And well, I'm pretty sure Sony will announce several 2023 exclusives more specially at E3.
I am so excited for Tchia. That game looks great!

P.S. KOTOR isn't launching anytime soon.

Starfield is the only big game MS really has next year.

The fact Redfall has to be listed as a big game.. after the abysmyal start to the gen.. in year 3 of the gen..

Is really sad lol

But for me Starfield + Spiderman + BOTW 2 is just an awesome year to be a gamer who owns every platform. Lots of other icing on the cake as well, but those are the biggies for me personally. TLOU Online has me super interested but I'm not much on "new" MP games.. I play Smite pretty much exclusively as far as my online fun goes.

Sony is going to have just about every crown though as far as metrics IMO.
I don't get this comment. Redfall looks good and Arkane regularly releases critically acclaimed games

Well we are all free to our opinions...

I would love to hear where you think both companies are and how each could improve!
I think both companies are good in a good spot. Better spots than they were last gen.

Xbox needs to get its AAA games out. Sony needs to make some successful MP games.

We'll see if they can succeed in their future goals. But I like where they are going. Future is bright.

Seems like the killing blow this year came with God of War, even if Sony doesn’t get another Keighly GOTY win SIE as a publisher is walking out of this year in first place. They absolutely killed it.

And this isn’t even counting the good 3rd party games. What do you think they need to release next year in order to stay ahead of everyone else, knowing xbox is releasing big games like Forza reboot, Starfield, Redfall, Minecraft Legends…possibly more

Nintendo is releasing Tears of The Kingdom and who knows what else but just that a lone puts them on the board for GOTY.

My Opinion: I think if Sony can release Spider-man 2 and Factions with the combination of Final Fantasy 16, that alone probably makes it a better year than this year even if none of those games score as high as Ragnarok.

Then you add in the PSVR2 launch, Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade, etc.

Wo Fang, Stalker Remake, Starfield, Hogwarts, Resident Evil 4 REmake, etc..

You see how many consoles they trying to sell next year? No way wolverine misses 2023.

This doesn't really matter because if you're buying a console, it's not just for that moment in time, it's for years to come. Point being is that people who want a PS5 will still buy it with or without Wolverine. And Sony isn't selling 30m consoles. I don't even see them manufacturing 30m PS5 units let alone selling that many.

Man.....is Lost Soul Aside ever coming out? We've been waiting since 2016.

Eventually. lol. It's definitely taking longer than expected.

Lol insomniac isn’t releasing two full sized AAA games in the same year. I dont even think they started motion capture for wolverine yet
I dont think they will come out the same calendar year but it's pretty safe to say they might release within 12 months of eachother

Ratchet and Miles Morales were only 6 months apart

I'm an Xbox fan but come on, man. COD is a big brand/IP but Sony and PlayStation are massive brands. Sony will be just fine and even if they had problems, they could always sell/merge with Amazon, Apple, Google or Tencent which would give them the monetary investment that would be needed if/when this were to ever occur.

Sony has already started to pivot towards PC which will include all of their games day one, they're going into mobile because my goodness, it's a cash cow and arguably, have the best development studios in the industry with amazing games and IP's. And even if all else fails and before even needing to sell/merge, well, they have a subscription service and if they need to pivot by putting their games on PS Plus day one, that's another option available to them if/when needed.

So again, Sony will be good.
Right now Sony is still doing well because they are riding on the success of the PS4, while Microsoft's new studios and publishers are still developing their new AAA games.
As soon as Microsoft's 1st party studios are ready (2023), it will be the beginning of the end for PlayStation as a platform. Xbox will be everywhere with the help of Xcloud. Consoles, TVs, Mobile, Tablets, PC... maybe even on your toaster. You only need a controller. Sony is still struggling with their cloud strategy and their mediocre services.

Microsoft is buying publishers! Publishers including famous IPs. Not some small random no-name studios like Haven or Savage Game Studio.
Microsoft will own some of the biggest gaming franchises ever. No matter if it's Minecraft, Call of Duty, Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, Elder Scrolls or Fallout. They own some of the biggest studios and publishers that ever existed. Microsoft pretty much dominates the whole WRPG and FPS genre. Minecraft is still the king for the kids.
Meanwhile you have Sony with some mediocre 1st party studios like PixelOpus, London Studio, Media Molecule (Dreams is a 10-year-failure), Valkyrie Entertainment, Haven, Asobi Team, San Diego Studio, Nixxes, or Firesprite.

If you're honest you will admit that PlayStation Studios only has 4 relevant/succeesful AAA studios. Naughty Dog (Uncharted, TLOU), Santa Monica Studio (GOW), Guerrilla Games (Horizon) and Sucker Punch (Ghost of Tsushima).
The rest of them are some unsuccessful AA studios like Housemarque or Savage Game Studio disguising as AAA studios. Or some random port/remake studios like Bluepoint, Valkyrie and Nixxes no one gives a shit about. And Polyphony is a joke compared to Turn 10 and Playground Games.

Of course there is Insomniac Games who's struggling to create new successful AAA IPs, so they have to work on foreign licenses (Marvel Spider-Man & Wolverine) to be succeesful.

First party wise, it is impossible to top this year.
What I would add for 3rd party is : Pragmata, GrandBlue Fantasy Relink and Little Devil Inside.
Plus like always - 100+ japanese games.
