Phil Spencer admits defeat in console space, and doesn't think great games would help Xbox's market share.

Please don't fall for Microsoft's underdog narrative. Spencer is speaking directly to regulators with this nonsense.

He's trying to garner widespread sympathy and support.

Xbox sucking is not a narrative for the CMA, it's just reality.

I've seen some people argue on other websites about how this might be a ploy to show regulators how desperately they need ABK. Seems like a bit of a stretch to me and the truth is that they genuinely don't understand the gaming industry like they think they do.
Sure, first time Phil actually speaks something that makes sense and it's all a lie to pass the ABK deal. Xbox fans are just idiots, that is a much better explanation.

As a PS fan, this is very, very bad for all gamers, Man we need an MS or Nintendo to compete with SONY/PS to create great software, great hardware/technology and at competing prices. Without them, I think we can PS becoming more anticompetitive.
Sony never needed MS to succeed.

it’s not going to happen, nobody outside gaming bubbles watches this.

To Xbox's credit, the beating Sony took with PSN in the PS3 era definitely led to a vastly improved PS4 experience. PSN is arguably better than Xbox Live now, but that was one area where Xbox did have a vision. Not much of that lately.

So Xbox biggest contribution was instituting paid online and convincing Sony that without that they were not going to be competitive. Thanks Xbox.

I had a PS3 and a 360 and I would much rather have the PS3 free online experience than paying to play P2P hosted games.

For about 10 years (until very recently) MS charged for F2P games while Sony, even when they were dominating the market never did it.

Xbox if anything makes PlayStation worse by constantly pushing things in a terrible direction.

I hate the subscription too, which is a big reason I will shill for Steam forever. But subscription or not, the experience was bad and now its great. I don't think Sony would've moved as aggressively otherwise, and Xbox would already have the CoD community locked down.

Did you even have a PS3? The experience was fine/comparable. Most games at that time were hosted by the players and if anything PS3 had more games with dedicated servers. PC also had free online all along and never lacked in comparison to Xbox.

Don't even come at me with some nonsense about lack of group chat or something like that, who cares?

I still have my launch PS3. It didn't have a party system at launch. PS HOME was the first way you could invite a PSN friend to a game. It was bad.

I don't care about any of that and as predicted I knew that would be the stuff you would use to justify charging for online. Do you honestly think that any of that justifies a subscription?

Sony at least had the decency to come up with the IGC before they started charging for it.

I would like to not pay that subscription. I try to buy MP games on Steam to wean off that subscription. But I'd still rather pay it than lack what ought to be standard features.

If you paid for Live Gold on Xbox you are part of the problem. I had a 360 and refused to pay, I went and bought a PS3. When MS showed up with Games for Windows live PC players, myself included, said "hell no".

Were you also in support of MS putting Netflix and the internet browser behind a paywall? Were you in support when they pushed for always online? Were you in support of charging for people to play F2P games? Are you in support of getting rid of physical media? Are you in support of games as a service being the focus for consoles?

Nah, MS is always pushing for the worst stuff, they just have a terrible vision for the console market.

I haven't owned an Xbox since the 360. If you really never paid for the sub on Playstation then you missed a ton of great games. I hate it, but I'm not gonna go out like that.

By the time PlayStation started to charge for it, you had no option since both manufactures charged for online, not to mention that Sony also introduced PS+ with IGC.

How can their fanbase be pleased with such mentality?

People had no second thoughts dropping their Xbox legacy to jump on the PS4 bandwagon BECAUSE of how Sony proved times and times again that it's all about good games.

And why do people need to sell their owned consoles instead of having a further one?
He has absolutely lost the plot, this mentality especially for a company is absurd.

⏰New Talking Point Just Dropped⏰

In a long line of nothing mattering, Winning doesnt matter now!

Winning a gen or not is irrelevant, I agree.
But that is definitely not the problem.
The problem is that the output is anemic and its quality is abysmal, so much for goalposts.
Xbots should demand better from MS and stop making excuses for it.
