I always remembered a major factor in people not committing to PC was missing out on awesome console exclusives, primarily PlayStation. Not sure why you’d eliminate that edge.
Yep. Historically, it would even incentivize PC gamers with far superior hardware to get a console on the side too.

I was fine when it was five year old games, but now with games getting ported in a year or so, I just think the strategy is self-destructive.

It's a catch-22 and almost self-defeating ideology though, not to mention wrong on some level. A lot of today's PC gamers WERE console players in the 360/PS3 and PS4/XBO gens. But because of various reasons on those respective platform holders alongside Steam growth, they moved from console and went to PC.

In other words, the platform holders could've done more to retain those players. Sony could be doing more today; porting at least non-GaaS titles to PC does not help them in that regard and it also shifts potential customers out of their direct ecosystem (PS console & storefront & subscription service & peripherals). At least with the trend they have been increasingly shifting towards the past couple of years.
PS5 is performing better than PS3 and PS4. Some old users may have moved to PC, but were replaced by a bigger amount of new players. Who also buy more gaes and dlc than before both in total and 1st party in particular.

People in these countries, the Middle East, Africa, etc. have always had means of access to some extent to prior consoles. Let's not pretend consoles have been complete non-factors here, particularly when it comes to Sony. In places where there were laws preventing legal console sales for a while, like China, those laws have since been removed.
I didn't say Middle East and Africa, I said the rest of Asia outside Japan and Latin America. In recent years, compared to NA & EU or Japan consoles are a very small market there, while mobile and PC are way bigger and have a great growth.

So they chase these emerging markets.

Dunno, sounds like there is some inherent notable risk if even Jim Ryan is now saying PC directly competes with PlayStation (and it does).
This thread -in a very anti Jim Ryan forum and by a very anti Jim Ryan user- is the only place in internet where we saw that quote. So I'd say it's a fake until a proper legit source is shown.

But yes, partly competes against PS. But it's still a good business decision to port some of their games there, specially after some some time after the original release on PS. Results show that PS improved since then, so if it had any effect on PS seems to be positive.

The console business is growing but that's partly due to inflation, partly due to increased costs in areas and now we are seeing Sony get more aggressive with pricing deals and discounts to shift units for meeting fiscal targets.
They are selling PS5 at record levels, and this isn't because of inflation or increased prices.

Doing more MP/GaaS titles in itself is a good thing, just depends on how fresh the game concepts are, if they're being smart leveraging legacy IP, and try not entering too many saturated genre markets in that regard. Same with the mobile games. Gaming adaptations to shows/films/theme parks etc. makes sense but again, there has to be a balance of variety and in ways that make sense. As an example, that Gravity Rush adaptation should've been at least a CG anime, IMO.
They have top tier people working on them. I'm confident that they'll do a very good job in most of the cases.

If he knows this then why does he continue to port the Playstation exclusive library to a competitor platform?

I'm sure his defenders will come in this thread saying how PC ports are still excellent because "reasons".
hey, what was the source for this? i've tried to find it anywhere else and it doesn't seem to exist.

PC port could be a short term bonus revenue till they’re live service release in mass HD2, Concord & TM in 2024 Horizon MH, Fairgames & Marathon in 2025. Hopefully PS goes back to its roots & have true PS exclusive push Nixxes to make remakes/remaster live service & mobile across PS, PC & Mobile make PS future clear w consumer not this vague he said she said oh the Sony CFO said more platforms that’s gotta mean Xbox & Nintendo bs

According to him and Sony they do it to reach more users and make more money.
If Sony wants to reach more players they have live service & mobile if you want to expand reach for specific franchise like Horizon porting & helping your competitors while devaluing your platform not smart bad business. Horizon live service is a smart way to reach more players w a franchise & good business doesn’t devalue your platform to a major degree

no, it's not a short term initiative. it's long term. the prize is 300M PC gamers in China, and an even longer path to other developing regions where PC parts are infinitely more available than consoles. the best place for sony to be would be no longer needing nixxes because all the internal teams have their own strong PC development pipelines.

i don't think xbox and nintendo are ruled out in the statement, but imo they're not highly likely. xbox just doesn't offer anything important to playstation. nintendo has a big international audience, but you could only port much older catalog titles to their platform(s). i'd actually kinda like to see LittleBigPlanet or Puppeteer come to Switch, but that's niche shit. Playstation's bread and butter is the cutting edge. There's only a handful of teams outside Sony who compete with AAA games from Naughty Dog or Santa Monica.

You hit the nail on the hand with the current state of things, Pre Jim Ryan Playstation was delivering so many high quality games that their dominance was understood, but with the recent first party drought and subsequent PC ports to gain paltry short term profits, they've basically coasted on that goodwill and being the de-facto high end console maker. The recent news of a horizon PC port just cemented why I'm done giving Playstation a chance anymore.
These PC port gonna hit PS badly w the PS6 the PS6 will most likely be a handheld hybrid why buy a PS6 instead of migrating to Nintendo & or buying & migrating to a Steamdeck 2 or PC. If they go day n date PC it’s over for PS, PS would be a sinking ship like Xbox that hardcore gamers wouldn’t invest same issue w Xbox why invest in Xbox its a sinking ship Xbox players migrated to PC & Xbox day n date PC lead to Xbox trading a Xbox gamer for a PC gamer & now Xbox has less Xbox gamers who cares about Xbox & PC players don’t care about Xbox consoles or it’s game they’re playing CSGO or Apex Halo is dead on console & PC. PS will be next if they continue

Best revelation yet, to go along with Microsoft eyeing a Valve buyout.

All good for gamer discourse, all good.
This is another reason for PS to stay of PC/Steam releasing singleplayer games on PC is dangerous MS is PC & they can easily buy Steam since they’re pushing 3rd party. PS goes day 1 PC now MS owns a consoles (Steamdeck) & PC platform that has Xbox games & PS games day 1 making PS consoles obsolete which will lead PS consoles to be irrelevant long term

Pretty sure PC doesn't consider PS competition

That's because those other companies are interested in bigger growth, they have shareholders to please.

Valve is privatley owned. You can bet your ass if valve was in the same situation they'd be looking for bigger growth.

Also lets not forget when Gabe came out to sonys e3 press conference apologetically for the shit he said abvout the ps3 and put portal 2 on ps3 😆

Who came back to who first? Sony didn't put shit on steam back then, straight up made him bend the knee infront of the gaming world.

More like they begged him to gain some positive PR for PS3's disastrous launch

Playstation will be fine as it's the defactp home console. As long as people keep buying consoles, it will be fine.

People on here are already making the cost argument. Not everyone has the money or cares enough about gaming to buy a good PC.

MS isn't going to buy Valve.
