I wonder sometimes, where did this strong resentment of PlayStation on places like Resetera come from anyway? Seems like they've always felt like PlayStation didn't deserve to have the library of games that it has had nor do they think it deserves to be as popular as it is.

It's like the period of time when PS3 was struggling the most and was a laughingstock is the position they want PlayStation to be in at all times.

It was always there to some degree, but was massively exacerbated during the acquisition process for ABK. We had things like this:

“Sony is trying to protect its dominance on the console. The way they grow is by making Xbox smaller,” Spencer said.

Statements like that are a big part of the reason why the resentment has become even more pronounced, I think. Then there's all the ambassadors and influencers (read: astroturfers) who simply fan the flames. As Xbox market share continues to plummet, it will only get worse too. I get why people like Phil want to blame Sony for his own failings, but the super fans who refuse to ask Xbox to do better are really only limiting their own enjoyment with gaming. And no matter how much they wish and dream, Sony isn't going to fail in order to create a level playing field with a gaming division that still refuses to focus on releasing great games.

That is because it is the only time MS was ever close to winning.

A lot of the resentment of Sony success in gaming is from Nintendo fanboys and former Nintendo fanboys who became Xbots in their teens. The Nintendo fans blame Sony for Nintendo's decline, which was just a case of Sony not treating third-party devs like shit while Nintendo screwed them at every turn.

Then there are the pathetic morons who think SEGA would have been on top if not for the PS2 coming along and smashing the Dreamcast, but the reality there is that SEGA was in dire financial straits at the time and barely even got the Dreamcast out the door. Even if they'd held on a bit better against the PS2 launch, the writing was on the wall for SEGA to retreat from being a platform-holder.

It's still crazy to me that they get mad at Sony for doing things that MS themselves have always done, in many cases even more egregiously.

Bioshock
Mass Effect
Oblivion
GTA 4 DLCs

Oh yea but Sony were and are the bad guy.

They would not have been on the map for the tactic that they scrutinized Sony so heavy for.

It goes beyond that. They freak out about things Sony doesn't do, but MS and Nintendo have long, documented histories of, and say that Sony does them, even when there's not a single instance of Sony having done those things.

Also, Sony is arrogant whenever they celebrate a success, price something where it makes even a slight profit, jokes about something or acknowledges that they are in a good position in the market, yet somehow Nintendo is NOT arrogant when they refuse to cut prices on ten-year old games, roll out two new games per platform on their subscription-only retro service or release limited edition systems that cost as much as buying the system and the game the limited edition is themed to, but don't include the game.

Also, none of the ridiculous statements of hubris MS mouthpieces have ever made were the slightest bit arrogant, including Peter Moore's infamous quote about the Red Ring of Death, "Things break. It happens" and the insistence that a 30% or higher defect rate is normal for electronics. (The real industry average for defects is more like 3-5%)

It is all insane.

For most of the more recent talking points, I've found there's a history with Phil. For example, third-party exclusives and even first-party exclusives have been heavily criticized when Sony does them. Here's Phil's take on exclusives:

"Sorry, I am a bit soapboxy with this one,” Spencer continues, “I find it completely counter to what gaming is about to say that part of that is to lock people away from being able to experience those games. Or to force someone to buy my specific device on the day that I want them to go buy it, in order to partake in what gaming is about.” Clearly, Spencer is talking about Sony and their PS4 exclusives, but the same could also be said of Epic Games and their aggressive signing of exclusive titles to their platform.

Source.

He said this in 2020, closed the Zenimax acquisition in 2021, and then made multiple titles unavailable on Nintendo and PS platforms going forward. The people getting mad at Sony only seem to ever focus on what he says and not on what he does. I realize there's been this ongoing console war for ages now, but so many talking points and the increased hostility towards Sony come directly from Phil and the other current Xbox execs. There's this 'cult of personality' sort of thing going on here. I find it odd that anyone takes his words seriously because there's such a disconnect between what he says and what he does (like the exclusives example). But not only do exteme fans take him seriously, they parrot his talking points while ignoring reality - such as, like you said, getting mad at Sony for doing the exact same things Xbox does.

I am just glad it isn't getting them traction in the market.

We need Xbox gone.

Don't forget that each one of those was marketed as a full exclusive, and the publishers couldn't even hint that they were coming to PlayStation until just a bit before they released for it.
