Xbox fans hiding behind Nintendo as usual. It's so tiring. They don't even have the same library and the Switch is from the 8th gen.

I don't know who came up with that classification, but you can't have 2 new consoles (aside from mid gen refreshes) from a company in the same generation.

WiiU and Switch are not the same console generation.

The switch is its own thing, it came out mid generation for the other two consoles, makes no sense even bringing nintendo up at this point, everything about their sales and how they market their products is completely unique to them

They pretty much combined their highly successful handheld business with their failing console business to get where they are right now

Wii U was a flop so Nintendo had to do something, the Switch was like a mid gen refresh.

Call the police and tell them to update Wikipedia so Sony can lose the gen 🤷

Nah. Switch isn't the same generation as a WiiU. They're fundamentally completely different generational devices. The "generations" divide has been mostly a meaningless thing for a while now anyway.

Its 16m and 22m and the gap is increasing

So next-gen started in 2017 with mobile games then? Whatever it takes so Sony can't be on top 😅

The market is very obviously changing. Console sales alone made sense back when there was no multiplatform.
Everything still depends heavily on console sales, though: platform revenue share, software sales, subs attach rate, first-party sales, in-app purchases share, etc.

Here is some data that puts things in perspective.

PS Plus has ~48 million paying subscribers (the gaming subscription service with the larger subscribe base), and it brings only ~$3 billion in revenue. PlayStation division overall brings in $25 billion revenue. That's mostly because of their console market share.

In other words, even the biggest gaming subscription service only brings in 12% revenue for the gaming company.

Console sale is still an excellent metric to measure success.

Let's be honest, you're only saying this because they're more successful than your console of choice 😘

Let's be honest, you only bring up the Switch because you want to downplay the PS5. Suddenly you become a big Nintendo fan in sales thread because your console is dead last 😘

Nobody is saying the Switch is a next-gen console besides Xbox fans. Not even your daddy Nadella and Spencer. They literally ignored the Switch when they said they were the market leader 3 quarters in a row.

The Switch is a handheld that came out in 2017. It's irrelevant in this discussion. Nadella agrees so take the L 🤡

With some simple napkin math you can say that the average user brings 60 quid per year (as of now, this will likely increase with the new plans). Imagine having a service with half the paying users and having a lot of them on heavily discounted plans. It's unsustainable.

Also Xbox is 2nd in terms of market share.

If you take Nintendo out, sure. If you add nintendo in, MS is dead last. Thanks for playing

I think "xbots" have no qualms about this, but it's always fun to see the how this little point ends up bothering so many PS fans, it's so inconsequential really.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest. I think two comparisons are fair:
  • Absolute revenue and net profit of hardware vendors (Nintendo / Sony / Xbox)
  • Console sales within the same segment (Sony / Xbox)
But doesn't bother me if people want to include Nintendo in the latter, it draws some decent that.
