Before Helldivers II there was no instance of Sony doing so. That is, the online paywall existed on PlayStation but all of Sony's consumers in the PlayStation ecosystem were treated equally with paywall. With Sony becoming a third party publisher, that is no longer the case, there is no uniformity of treatment, PlayStation consumers are getting the short end of the stick and PC gamers are not.

That is to say, You can bash Sony with sound reason today, whereas before, Sony could execuse itself behind mountains of bullshit to justify the online paywall. There is nowhere to hide today under any argumentation. It's clear cut.
This has been the industry standard for 10+ years now. If the only difference is that Sony publishes on PC, you're just whining that a better option is now available rather than only having the bad option.

You and others can characterize it as whining and that is your prerogative. I believe that dismissal of the problem at hand to be idiotic and reductive, with an intent of attacking the messenger, in other words, a bad faith actor and shitstain. That is my prerogative.

This instance however is the total expression of unequal treatment beyond a shadow of a doubt that leaves no wiggle room for Sony, or its defenders, in the public court of law if you will to find excuses to justify the paywall on whatever grounds their imagination comes up with. Sony themselves have destroyed that with this recent move by creating a two-tiered system of treatment of its consumers.

Obviously some low IQ masses have quite a headache understanding the contextual difference - without a breakdown it becomes rocket science. Normal folk don't think like say, lawyers. I think the only miscalculation for folks who understand the OP is how dumb the masses can truly be, and hence why they're had by corps, like Sony or MS.

So you’re outraged because of the paywall that has always existed. Okay. This is not a Helldivers problem.

F2p games shouldn’t bypass paywall on console. If you don’t want to pay to play online just go pc and deal with the clusterfuck that is pc gaming. Problem solved and we don’t need to hear pointless bitching.

No, Sony should not cater to Fortnite and Warzone and having those games bypass paywall when Destiny, Rainbow Six and Diablo do not. It gives the f2p BRs a bigger potential playerbase by default and is anti-competitive.

There should be changes for sure but there’s no way they’re removing the paywall.

Not that Im an online gamer, but there are millions of players who love online games. Cant ignore them, plus Sony has made online games forever ago
Yeah but when it's online only & you're saying you have to pay £70 to buy this game then say oh & now to even play it you also need to pay a subscription fee that's disgusting & I'll never support it

How someone can feasibly defend that Sony does not charge for online multiplayer on PC but does on Playstation is just... Insane. And I wonder if the game will be cheaper on PC to boot.
Wellcome to the last decade sweet summer child

Sonys Gaas are doomed to fail if they are not F2P.
MLB, Gran Turismo 7 and Destiny 2 are a big success. I think it will be successful. Also, the next Bungie and ND games will be very successful too. Helldivers 1, at a smaller scale (it was a AA top down dual analog coop shooter), was also a big success in both reviews and sales, this is why the sequel is AAA.

Sony has been releasing playstation games on PC since 1995 with twisted metal.

You pay for online on console. PC players can't be cornered like consolecels. It's simple.

You guys will cry and complain, but you'll keep supporting playstation. Why bother waste the energy complaining?

The paywall has not always existed. Not on PS in any case. And nobody is claiming that it is strictly a Helldivers problem.

What has changed from 2013 to today is that SONY, not any other third party publisher with no control over the paywall, but SONY itself has decided to treat consumers of its published games in a two tiered system. From this day forward, PlayStation owners pay $80 + $70 = $150 for access to Sony's traditional multiplayer games, while consumers of the same Sony published title on PC pay $70. Sony is the company engaged in unequal treatment of consumers, not other third party publishers. Before Helldivers II there was no clear cut instance of Sony treating its consumers in a two-tiered system.
Yes there was. The first game also had a PS4 version. Which already made the issue even worse back then, because people only paid for online to play it on PS4, versus PS3, PSVita and PC.

Plus, to be clear, I refuse to subscribe to Plus. After the online paywall was announced, I let my existing (stacked) subscription expire.

You're right. I tried to drop a "AAA" distinction in the OP when I made the thread for that reason. Folks care little about indie titles with little reach. I always viewed the first title as an indie project Sony got console exclusivity rights mid-to late in dev cycle, and somehow the PC release had nothing to do with Sony, but it does. So technically speaking, Helldivers I was the first middle finger, even if it got ported to PC 7 months later - doesn't change the substance of the practice. Then from Helldivers I in 2015 there is a long pause, up to Helldivers II. The fact of the matter is that with 12 GAAS games in the pipeline, we're going to be seeing this shit splashed straight to your face much more frequently going forward, and Helldivers II, as a big AAA, is just the beginning. First they came for the Socialists, and I said nothing cause I was not a socialist, then for the unionists, and I said nothing cause.... then for the jews.... etc.

Also you don't need to be clear about anything. The idea that folks need to drop a self disclaimer auto-bio every-time they post cause some clowns here try to run a purity test instead of dealing with the substance of the matter at hand is crazy. These posters prefer to go personal and attack the messenger to shield daddy Sony rather than tackle the substance of the matter seriously. It's your typical run of the mill complaint fanboys and corporate slaves who don't want to "hear it" cause it causes cognitive dissonance - and that's uncomfortable for their brain. Some aren't even aware of their condition - those are truly lost, or they refuse to self-acknowledge it cause well... it's not good to say the least. I call some of these folks out straight up which is why my onlyfans keeps growing in that regard.... new subs every thread. You can tell by the passive aggressiveness in their posts and their attempts at "smart" quips. The ones who are not so brave just decide to keep distance of the threads... getting burnt in prior "skirmishes" teaches them that. But mostly they keep distance so as to avoid getting their word on record and exposed to getting burnt again on the spot or later down the line - a nice list of those. Mind you when you have 120 million individuals in the PlayStation ecosystem, braindead fanboys are a dime a dozen, so it's to be expected, and a PlayStation fanboy is not exceptional compared to the rest - proof in the pudding. Just gotta try to push the message across amongst all the BS - happens every time.

no. You still have to pay for online for xbox. Just not the free to play games. Why is helldrivers 2 not free to play on the ps5? Why do you need the membership? Thats what im saying. Baka.
Yeah Xbox made that change for F2P games because Playstation had that benefits for a long time, but for more than just F2P games. E.g. FF14 on PS4 didn't require PS+ to play online back in 2014. Not sure if that has changed at all, but it's been almost a decade of such a policy on PS.
