They don’t plan to so FAR

til the end of this generation, you'll continue to wait 2 years to play a singleplayer playstation game, and with pressure for PS6 to surpass PS5, it's pretty safe to say they won't change this very soon, this is a winning strategy, and even investors are bringing questions about cannibalization, Sony is not as dumb as you think they are

Unless these games are GaaS, multiplayer, remastets, Bungie games, remakes, low budget, etc.

All you guys have left to hold on to is the hope they wont release their very few AAA single player only games day one on PC.

You just know certain journalists had their articles ready to go.

Tassi seems like a salty bitch on twitter about it.

Glad that loser blocked me. I didn't even really say anything to him or anything, just called out his clickbaity crap. Was enough to trigger him, apparently.

Some of these journalists are worst than the diehard console warriors they pretend to be above just because they have 'professional' titles.

The reality of the situation is this:

No one who plays a 2-year late PlayStation Studios port to PC is going to buy a $500 console to play the sequel on a vastly inferior system. They'll just wait for the sequel to also come out on PC while they chip away at their backlog. Very few people who own a PS5 are going to spend an insane amount of money to build a PC that can run games better than that console.

If Sony is porting these games to PC anyways, doesn't it make more sense to have their PC releases also benefit from the marketing dollars spent on the console version's launch? Square Enix appears to be arriving at this conclusion.

People will and do buy PlayStation's to play upcoming games.
Those that are willing to wait can do just that, its their money and time.
Square Enix is not a platform it is just a Publisher they don't need to sell boxes.

No it doesn’t cause Sony wants to sell Hardware.

With Hardware comes subscriptions, 100% 1st party revenue and 30% 3rd party revenue.

You don’t get that with Steam and in fact lose 30% of 1st party revenue too. Let’s not forget revenue lost to piracy.

PC gamers are living in a fantasy world if they believe Sony will put them on the same pedestal as Playstation gamers.

At best you will get GaaS games and some remakes like Until Dawn.

You need to realise that Sony is only involved in PC to supplement their revenue. This isn’t a Microsoft situation.

Made PlayStation a 30 billion revenue company on it's own, the biggest gaming company by revenue.

It would be pretty insane if they pushed more aggressively in the PC direction.

But I think that is part of the reason they split SIE into Platform and Studios.... first was for cost reasons...

Now we will see PS platform makes ALL the money and 1st party makes very little, thats why Hermen was always talking about costs... and cost control.
Investors will see clearly where their bread is buttered and that should push them to insist on more exclusivity and increased hardware sales.

You say this as if EVERY PC gamer has better-than-PS5 specs in their setups. Most don't. Go check the Steam GPU & CPU usage charts, they will back this up.

They'll just wait for the sequel to also come out on PC while they chip away at their backlog.

This might be true and it's something I think SIE need to be concerned about WRT their porting cadence already established on PC, but not because most PC gamers are rocking mega-powerful rigs.

Very few people who own a PS5 are going to spend an insane amount of money to build a PC that can run games better than that console.

And most won't need to. In fact, if a good chunk of the casual or mainstream types who end up buying cheap PC gaming devices (because of slower adoption by hardcore & core enthusiasts on the console side early on) do so in lieu of console, they likely would be 100% fine with gaming specs below a PS5.

Casuals and mainstream don't care about power and they aren't obsessed with top performance.

If Sony is porting these games to PC anyways, doesn't it make more sense to have their PC releases also benefit from the marketing dollars spent on the console version's launch?

No. For starters, the only vested interest they have on the PC side IS the game, whereas with the console they have the console hardware, the subscription service, 3P sales off PS Store, MTX add-ons for GAAS titles (1P & 3P), peripherals etc.

Put it this way: a $70 purchase on PC is worth substantially less to SIE than a $70 purchase of that same game on their own console. So until they shore up enough vested interests in the PC space to match what they have in console (specifically WRT profits, but revenue is also important), Day 1 PC for all of their games will just incentivize more of the high-ARPU hardcore/core enthusiasts to opt for PC, the platform with less vested interests for SIE.

And let's face it; as Helldivers 2 is proving, the PC buying base simply isn't big enough to offset the potential revenue & profit drifts. Even if the split is something like 30:70 in favor of Steam for a game like HD2, those PS5 customers are still more valuable to SIE because they're the ones who've also bought a PS5, and likely bought several games just this year alone that SIE are getting 30% profit cuts from, are the ones that sub to PS+, likely bought a PS Portal etc. The Steam customers aren't providing ANY of that additional revenue or profit for SIE, and this is Helldivers 2, a GAAS title.

So in what universe does doing Day 1 for non-GAAS titles (specifically AAA tentpole) make sense just because "marketing budgets would align", when that isn't driving enough PC people to buy-in to produce comparable ARPU value to SIE as the console buyer? And why would SIE risk having high-ARPU console owners switch their primary platform from PlayStation to something like Steam just for a few extra PC copies to be sold?

Square Enix appears to be arriving at this conclusion.

Square-Enix appears to be arriving at a lot of things which may or many not include Day 1 multiplatform releases for games like FF. I still assert there were other things related to their release scheduling, and with FF in particular, inconsistent quality ranges stemming back to around FF XIII.

FF also has had issues with consistent game design decisions, and alienating larger chunks of the fanbase jumping between major installments because of certain changes even if the games themselves were quality. If none of that stuff is truly fixed, then simply slapping the next big FF on other platforms Day 1 won't suddenly cause a massive explosion in sales. It'd help, but wouldn't address problems at the root.

So whatever a Day 1 multiplat strategy would fix, would be hampered by that.

That's a fair point.

Anyone with a Steam account, take a look at your 2023 year in review. It has stats for playtime based on the age of games.

The percentage of Steam playtime in games released:
in 2023: 9%
in the last 1-7 years: 52%
8 or more years ago: 38%

Thought this was funny:

All those dumb ass youtubers, podcasters who tried to frame a narrative that Playstation and xbox had the same issues look like the clowns they are. All the ColtEastwoods and Destins.

Bunch of moron's who eat what Microsoft gives them for narratives. We tried telling them during FTC something doesnt add up about the Economics of Gamepass, even Bobby kotick and Zelnick from take2 said it does not make sense.

And now look at who has a winning strat, that just needs some slight correction. Which Sony has done, and will continue to do.

He is 100% correct. People cannot accept that PS and Xbox are in two completely different trajectories.

Wait this dude has a PS5 yet he's only been hyping Steam ports of PS games? 😂

Otherwise, well it's rare but I mostly agree with Mike's take. My only suggestions to SIE would be; some of their GAAS still need to be PS exclusive, and some of their non-GAAS AAA & AA also need to remain PS exclusives. The ones that do get ported, some should go for longer windows between platforms (3-4 years at least).

They also need to prioritize mobile ahead of PC for multiplat expansion because it's both less friction to the console and opens up additional monetization options non-existent on PC and console.

And I hate to admit it but among the media types, he's the only one making a bit of sense on Sony's strategy. Significantly more than 🤡s like Paul Tassi and Tom Warren.

Following microsoft as alaways despite microsoft destroying their business.
I don't fucking understand it.
Why can't they be like nintendo?
Nintendo does their own thing. Is content and confident with their output and don't need competition to be good.
Sony seemingly starts to coast as soon as xbox dies

Sony has been publishing computer games since 1984, 40 years ago. They started making MSX games, in addition to MSX computers and accesories.

Later as CSG Imagesoft, and then as Sony Imagesoft did games for 8 and 16 bit consoles and PC. Then bought Psygnosis and released with them games for PC, as also did with Sony Online Entertainment and other SCE (now SIE), Sony Music and Sony Pictures subsidiaries.

Then, after releasing some minor games like Helldivers 1 or Predator Hunting Grounds and allowing certain 2nd party partners (ThatGameCompany, Giant Sparrow, Kojipro, Quantic Dream) publish with other people or themselves old games in other platforms like PC, they started the recent push of publishing late ports of current big games with the release of Horizon Zero Dawn in 2020. Which is 4 years ago, not 2.

years latter coming to pc

Their approach for the current PC push started 4 years ago didn't change and will continue being the same: their SP games get released around 2-10 years after their original release (the original one, not remasters or ports) on PS. Most GaaS (not GT7, Dreams or MLB) released day one on PC.
