Just to be clear, the amount [11.5 billion USD] will not be used on SIE, it is for Sony entirely, & also might not get used entirely.

During interviews Hiroki Totoki expanded that previously made acquisitions in the gaming sectors were difficult because they still had to work much further to brush up the games released and that costs time and money.

Hiroki Totoki also said that in the future in M&A they will be very selective in Acquisitions and focus on wether the acquisition will improve returns in future.

We will see if Sony will ever buy a big video gaming company. The statement that PlayStation will be an essential key for their long-term growth, makes me feel more confident about it. Selective doesn't need to be bad condition. Like they could evaluate which gaps they still have in their portfolio. Japanese RPGs, Japanese Fighting games are still missing for a more diversified catalogue. Imo theme doors are wide open for acquisitions even big M&A like Square or Sega for example still possible. There are mulyiple ways for completing an M&A.

I agree. Selective isn't bad at all.

They are going to buy fewer but those few that have a high chance for returns.

This can almost even increase the chance of acquiring a studio that is already making games.

Sony is listing a selection of old and new PS5 1st Party games. The first thing that catches my eye is that they put Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in there. This ain't 1st Party but they still chose this over for example Stellar Blade. SB would at least be seen somewhere as 1st Party. This is actually gives me hope, that Sony could still consider buying Square Enix in the future.

Holy Square Enix stock is falling rapidly.
A staggering $3.84B market cap.
Seems like Investors weren't satisfied with the Multi-platform embrace. Because they know how that worked out in the past...
Now is the perfect opportunity for Sony to buy Square Enix for cheap.

saw it and was shocked as well.

I hope Sony will look into acquiring them.

It will cost them like 5 and a half billion or so. Which is a great deal for a legendary publisher/developer like Square.

Sony should have bought Square Enix in the early '00s.

Agree but now it's not too late. There is still hope for thus merger someday to happen.

They wouldn't be doing so bad if they stop bleeding money into Mobile they've had 2 of their 5 shut down in the past 2 years. Another one is losing money and just had to drop its English audio support going forward (just after its 4th anniversary) not to mention every time you login to it you get blasted with ads trying to tempt you to buy microtransactions in the game right away.

Sony finally realized that PlayStation is their golden goose.

Without PlayStation their market cap would have tanked much more. Hence why they finally said that PlayStation will be an essential role for their long-term growth.
Time to stop treating PlayStation as stepchild and give them love they deserve.

Even native Japanese people wish Sony to acquire Square Enix.

Square Enix value is continuing to decline. I think if Square Wnix should be near insolvency, then Sony will likely step in.

If sony gets Square Enix they preserve their stay in Japan for eternity. While also having control of big franchises like Microsoft has with Fallout/Elderscrolls/Doom/Dishonored, etc.

(Doesnt mean they can be exclusive, actually might even be good for most games to be multiplatform as more games will being a bigger mindshare of Square + SIE)

They also have a place in RPGs & a big one at that, as well as a MMO which has a place in the hearts of many.

& will benefit Square as well because they now have Sony funding, the recognition and marketing of Sony, while also having several games release on different platforms.

Agree. It would have a huge image boost in Japan. Japanese would rethinking their realtionship with PlayStation and say: "Sony cares about Japan".

Also a really good developer would be FurRyu for internal PlayStation Studios. They could achieve great things with more budget. There are a lot of former Squaresoft employees working there

Looks do great. Imagine what they could deliver with budget provided by Sony

Agreed.

This might seem basic and look stiff because it has a low budget.

But these kinds of stories and gameplay styles are actually midding from sonys style.

& they don't need to skyrocket the budget to insane heights, they can still have an ample budget but combined with the resources Sony has in every sense.

But Square Enix is personally very important in every way as well, the Variety, the IPs, the connections, the Legacy, everything.

That's if they want to sell to them. Right now they seem to think as well as youtube influences its the exclusives that are damaging the comply Yongyea posted a video the other day 🙄 stating that Square Enix is not doing Exclusives anymore because of the failed sale expectations of FFXVI and FFVII Rebirth. If that's why the company thinks is losing money it deserves to be driven into the ground. They have more then the F.F brand to its name. If they would stop making stupid business decisions they would be fine. Stop sinking money into Mobile, make better decisions with games, stop making merchandise for their games (figures, watches, statues). Forspoken was hot trash, Marvel Avengers flopped so far every venture out from their F.F. brand has been a terrible decision.

Square Enix is gonna mess up. This Multi-platform embrace will ultimately lead them to a much worse situation than before. Multi-platform development has several disadvantages. Longer cycles to develop, higher costs for optimisation. Ports to other platforms can also be expensive. Neither Wada nor Matsuda did learn: Xbox had zero ROI, all their projects failed there. FF14 bombed very hard on Xbox. The next big game with Vision of Mana releasing will prove this once again. As we know Square Enix will not stop with Mobile, they will keep pushing and messing up further. Nintendo Switch 2 won't be the messiah as Nintendo fanboys are preaching. In the fiscal year report, the President Furukawa stated Switch 2 won't be a technical revolution. Ergo not as powerful as Nintendo fanboys are believing. Square Enix will port games over on Switch 2, but I doubt that all big titles will run on the device. DQ12 likely, but KH and FF? I don't believe so. PC is not the big help of which many think. Square Enix titles usually underperform on PC, except for the MMO FF14. FF7R sold less than 300k on Epic and Steam.
Anyway Kiryuu seems to be as ignorant as Wada and Matsuda. Square Enix will dive into a similar situation as they where when the movie FF Spirits Within flopped. Then the chance for Sony might be there. Also if we believe what the Eidos founder said back then in 2022, Sony being only interested in the Japanese part of Square Enix, the talks approximately started in 2022. Means it could be still a long way for negotiations.

The 1.8 Trillion YEN allocation would be worth 16.4 Billion USD in 2021.

At the present exchange rate it's only worth 11.5 Billion USD.

It's such a shame it's gotten so worse. Totoki even called it out while talking about M&A I think.
