I have confirmed this rumor with a source.

It doesn't mean Microsoft will go ahead with it but that they are in talks.
Will be interesting if they have the ASUS rog xbox next gen, and the MSI ventus xbox, and the ASRock Challenger xbox lmao. And some of them will have more ram or better cpu.. idk how that's going to work as a console brand, gonna make tech support funky

Xbox's failures are not the only issues facing The Industry. They're not even the main issues.

Issues facing the industry? Profits have never been higher, revenue has never been higher. What issues?

Xbox issues?

You’re worried about megacorps not managing to make 5$ for every 0.5$ it costs them?

It’s a creative industry there’s no such thing as a sure thing.

they're jumping the gun talking about day-1, but that's the CEO of SONY talking about Playstation coming to PC. there are Icon posters who think Jim Ryan leaving mean his initiatives were rejected by leadership in Japan. It's not the case.

It's being retooled/reconsidered in the scope of the non-GaaS tentpole titles. However for the GaaS, of course many of them would continue coming to PC, some Day 1, like Helldivers 2 and Marathon. Or the next Destiny 2 expansion.

It's the traditional AAA releases where many have been (I would say rightfully) speculating plans have changed, especially in light of some of the data from the Insomniac ransomware hack.

Going the 3DO route is indicative of how stupid Microsoft is. Could have pulled a SEGA and transitioned gracefully, instead the want to keep failing all the way down.

According to a rumor that is circulating on Neogaf, Xbox / Microsoft may be considering using 3rd party hardware manufacturers to make their next console(s).

It may open up the platform to multiple hardware manufacturers.

It's unclear how this would work practically or if it would be popular with customers.
Makes sense.

If I was Microsoft, I'd make a free Windows Xbox Edition, mixing the Xbox UI and Steam Os Big Picture, with the idea of using it in home console or portable console shaped PCs.

The idea would be to allow 3rd party hardware manufacturers to include it in their home or portable console shaped PCs.

And then partner with some, maybe more than one, 3rd party manufacturer to allow them brand their console/portable shaped devices as Xbox.

Regarding gaming hardware, Microsoft would only manufacture themselves the Xbox controllers.

That would allow them grow their market while also to stop losing money with their hardware.

This rumor is wild but at the same time sooooo Microsoft of Microsoft. This kind of thing is right up Microsoft's alley. Bailed out of console while giving your stooges of a fanbase the allusion that you're still in the game.

Makes you wonder why Sony wouldn't do the same.
Unlike MS, Sony has a very successful and profitable business with their console (hardware+games+subs).

Sony is the market leader, so doesn't make sense for them to leave that market.

they're jumping the gun talking about day-1, but that's the CEO of SONY talking about Playstation coming to PC. there are Icon posters who think Jim Ryan leaving mean his initiatives were rejected by leadership in Japan. It's not the case.
What the Sony CEO said is that they'll continue doing the same they are already doing and have been working on, even before Jim Ryan was CEO.

As the Sony CEO said, Sony will continue focusing on their own console, but also will continue expanding their business in shooters/MP/GaaS, PC, mobile and cloud (plus even if he didn't mention it, using their IPs outside gaming like in movies, tv shows, theme parks and maybe new areas).

The strategy will continue being essentially the same.

Most of the stuff the next CEO will announce will be things already in the works during the Jim Ryan era or even before:
  • Sony will continue focusing on their console while also expanding in other markets like PC, mobile, movies, tv show and anime
  • Sony will release the GaaS and non GaaS games they had in the works since many years ago
  • Sony will release PS6 and PSVR3
  • Sony will continue porting old non-GaaS games to PC
  • Sony will continue growing their internal teams
  • Sony will release in phones/tablets/tvs a client for PS cloud gaming
  • Future PS5 and PS6 digital games will be playable in the cloud if you have PS+ Premium
  • Sony will open their own PSN PC store (unlike in Steam or Epic, games there could be crossbuy with PS5 PSN and Android PSN store for games available in both)
  • Sony will open their own Android PSN store (unlike in Google Play games there could be crossbuy with PS5 PSN or PC PSN if available in both stores)
  • All these Asian devs who in recent years partnered with Sony to bring their IPs to mobile gatchas (+ releasing some of them in PC and maybe console too)
  • Sony will partner with more top key publishers and small buotique teams for mobile gaming and will allow them use Sony's IPs
  • Sony will continue making some acquisition once they sell their banks division in key areas where Sony isn't top, as could be mobile gaming, eSports and PC (plus maybe in some key genre where Sony as publisher isn't a top player, as could be fighting)
New things that the new CEO could introduce (some may already be in the works):
  • Expand PS IPs bringing them to the board games market (huge one) maybe first partnering and later acquiring a leading player of that market
  • Expand PS IPs with a bigger presence in the toys and figurines merchandise market partnering and later acquiring some leading player of that market (as could be Bandai Namco)
  • Making a bigger effort in other types of merchandising (apparel, mugs, etc)
  • Partner with Bravia/Inzone to release a PlayStation branded tv optimized for PS5 gaming (I can't believe they still don't have it)
