From 2017-2023, the console games market has grown +59%. PC only +37%; has shrunk since 2022

We also know for a fact that PC software sales pale in comparison to any console sales. Diablo 4 PC would've been the only single SKU game to chart in a sea of console SKUs last year. Capcom just means it's their main development platform for multiplat releases. We know they produce console exclusives constantly.

Alright, so no PC numbers, got it.
Do you seriously believe the best-selling sku for Street Fighter 6, Resident Evil 4 (with PSVR2 mode) and Dragons Dogma 2 is the PC version? Like every NPD and UK threads, the Steam version was number 1 for all of them?

You can't be serious? Not even Gabe's personal mistress would believe that 🤣

It's because PC sales are too low to register.

UK:
Resident Evil 4 physical: 145k
Resident Evil 4 console digital: 136k
Resident Evil 4 PC digital: ~40k (Not on top 20 list, sub 43k)

I went to check Capcom's numbers, and saw they also included there IDG market numbers for the console, PC and mobile game revenue reported in different ways (in all cases, showing bigger game revenue for PC than for console):

image.png

Here they show more IDG numbers reported in another way (consumer = console):
image.png

And here in another way (please not this one is in FY, not CY):
image.png

"package" = physical copies, basically console
"digital (cs)" = digital games for console
Playstation is the biggest platform for all the publishers, unless you think PC is bigger than all consoles combined 🤡

Capcom = 45% with the 3 consoles or 64% between Xbox and PS. These numbers are outdated so Xbox is even lower now.

Here Capcom details per platform their physical units shipped, but the download units sold have all the platforms merged:

image.png

I'd bet Capcom reported their own game revenue split per platform somewhere (with PC having crossed the 50% in recent times), but I can't find it now.

That's a huge assumption to make, especially with the pc market for gaming contracting in the post COVID era. (Crossing 50%)

It isn't an assumption, it's a fact. Just found it, they said it in two quarters in a row. And then in a later quarter they said that kept growing beyond.

This was in their Q&A for the Q1FY22 fiscal report:

In Q3FY22 they said this:

Q4FY22:

In Q1 and Q3 for FY23 didn't say anything. In Q2FY23 said:

Btw, all platforms and markets declined post covid, not only PC. In the fiscal year that started this week (FY24) should start to grow again after going back to normality after the covid spike. Later than most people in the industry expected, people thought the recovery was going to start in FY23. Part of the firings, closures etc may have been because the difference between what they expected (to go back to grow) and what the found in FY23 (to decrease, like in FY22).

These charts/tables are pretty clear cut so I stand corrected. PC is indeed the largest single platform for Capcom.

The funny thing is based on those IDG numbers the PC market isn't growing nearly as fast as the console market. Between 2016 and 2023, PC only grew 33%. Meanwhile console grew 95%. And based off of their projections, the PC market will be stagnant in the next 5 years, meanwhile console will grow beyond pandemic levels of spending.

Regardless of where you look, except the bizarre outlier Pelham Smithereens chart, the story is the same. That's why it's important to keep correcting the narrative that PC is in any way a superior market to consoles. We hear that lie repeated too often due to steam engagement stats.

Is it saying the sales of Street Fighter 6 and Resident Evil 4 on PC are bigger than PS4 + PS5? It doesn't match with any sales charts that we have. It's just impossible.

PC will always be ahead of consoles when it comes to revenue

PC games have generated more revenue than console games for the past 10 years, but mobile dwarfs them both

OMG did you even read the thread or you bots just repeat each other? That sales charts have been posted thousands of times and it's counting all the market in China/Korea. Useless for big western publishers that publish on consoles or even Capcom or Square. These people are not buying Resident Evil lmao 🤣

Not only is that not true and indeed the PC market does include the broadly useless China market as @Gediminas said, but the chart has been debunked several times in this thread.

I also need to correct myself here - mobile is very clearly the largest single platform for Capcom. I'm curious which actual markets (i.e. countries) their PC revenue comes from because their PC sales are likely weaker in the US and EU markets than their console sales - we have EU wide splits for their 2023 releases and it's not pretty for PC.

if they sell the same SKUs in Asia then that means Asia PC is a viable market for their AAA multiplatform games which makes their 'PC main platform schtick understandable.

Mobile alone makes more than consoles and PC combined. This is where the real money is and I'm surprised Sony doesn't invest more into mobile.

They definitely aren't bigger in Europe/the UK. We're talking 2-4x ratios just between the PS consoles and PC. Something drastically different is happening in Asia for Capcom

Handheld PCs are becoming more and more popular and thanks to handheld PCs the PC market could overtake the console market
