yep not even close. Nintendo fanboys can argue that the Switch is a console, but no one can argue that the Switch Lite is, it's a pure handheld. So either way, they look silly. Switch as a console is barely doing better than the PS4.
Damn. When you put it that way...

Switch is a console, its a hybrid console. But the Switch lite is a handheld, so I think it's fair to subtract the ~20m Switch Lite's from the Switch's overall count. So it's not remotely close to the PS2.
It is handheld.

Clearly.
  • As a home console (hybrid), the Switch is still a long way behind the PS2 (at the moment, it needs 43.84 million to catch up with the PS2, so it's unlikely it'll manage it), and yes, the Switch Lite can't be counted here because it's 100% portable.
  • And as a portable console, it still has 14.67 million to overtake the DS, but that's feasible.
  • Compared with the DS+Wii combo (Handheld+Home = 255.65 million), it'll never reach that score despite Nintendo's attempts to combine the 2 markets.

So doing better than the PS4 and with additional presence on the portable only market... sounds like a great position to be in.

I see no point in trying to discredit Nintendo and how they outmaneuvered Sony in the console market. Switch 2 is likely going to steal even more market share from Sony and get far more third party support. Sony has zero presence in the portable market and can't even find it within them to try at this point.

I very much doubt Nintendo will start giving their valuable games away on subscriptions or start porting games to Steam, they were not foolish enough to follow the steps of Xbox.

Clearly.

PS2 released 24 years ago and has nothing to do with modern Sony. Move on it's completely irrelevant at this point and Sony seem unable and even unwilling to try to ever get close to PS2 numbers again.

Nintendo fanboys are ridiculous and they know it.

It's not the first time, it's like the GB and GBC, everyone with a functioning brain knows that Nintendo might count them together but they're still 2 different consoles, the Color has over 300 exclusive games that don't work on the original GB which is more than enough to know that it's a console apart like so was the GBA.

I see no point in trying to discredit Nintendo...

Saying that the Switch lite is a 100% portable console isn't discrediting Nintendo, it's just the truth that can't be denied.

I'm not discrediting Nintendo at all, I'm just saying the rabid Nintendo fanboys are wrong about it "beating the PS2". Nintendo as a gaming business is in an ideal position, Sony is definitely gonna lose a lot of 3rd party Japanese exclusives once the Switch comes out.

When it comes to home consoles, no one is going to repeat the PS2's figures. The market has changed, and if Sony has trouble repeating that performance, it's certainly not going to be Nintendo, let alone Microsoft.

Let's be realistic: before Sony entered the market, nobody was selling 100 million units.

Sony has made this the norm since the PS1. The PS2's 160 million isn't the norm, it's just an exceptional case.

Well, Nintendo is the one with a 140m+ console on the market right now. You guys can try to discredit them as much as you want but it's obvious how well they are doing, without having nearly the same support that Sony gets from third party devs.

Due to technology the gap in power will matter less and less everything is lining up for Nintendo to do even better. Their hardware set up also lives the door open for them eventually releasing a more powerful non-portable SKU.

Sony is doing a great job at following everything Xbox did to make their console irrelevant while Nintendo is doubling down on their own hardware.

Sony entered the market 30 years ago, time to move on from giving them credit for beating the N64.

A portable console is a console, why does it matter?

Why do you guys need to frame it so that Sony's decision to completely give up on the portable market and on the Japanese market doesn't matter?

They clearly misread the market and assumed mobile gaming would render the portable market irrelevant, turns out they were completely wrong and now Nintendo is much better positioned then Sony.

I think the assumption that Nintendo will never try to show up with a more direct competitor to the PlayStation is a completely misguided. Technology is making it really easy for them to be competitive in both the regular home console market and the portable console market.

You're completely off the mark, talking about truthful things I don't call that discrediting, you need to revise your definition of this word.

What we do know is that Nintendo had to combine the 2 markets (portable and home) to have a chance of succeeding (the 160M mark), as they missed out with the DS.

Switch/Oled (hybrid) + Lite (portable) = 2 markets so Facts are facts.

Sony didn't need to do that, they made 160 million on a single market, that's a factual point.

A portable console is a console, why does it matter?

Handheld market =/= home console market, they are different.

You guys are exactly the mirror image of Xbox fans that spend decades in denial making up excuses instead of facing reality. Sony is in direct competition with NVidia, Steam and Nintendo like it or not.

A portable console (with the vast majority units sold being made to easily connect to the TV) is not a console? That sound extremely stupid and only highlights the fact that you guys want to make up exclusives.

Why is PlayStation competing directly with Nintendo so scary to you?

This isn't about helping Sony or discrediting Nintendo. No one is reframing anything, the Switch Lite isn't a console, so the Switch can never be the best selling console. Has nothing to do with one side winning or losing, it's about facts.

Literally no one ever said Sony isn't in direct competition with Nintendo lol ???

No, it's you who's in denial, unable to analyse simple things.

Here you're like Nintendo fanboys when they unplug their brains.

Why is PlayStation competing directly with Nintendo so scary to you?

Nintendo is no longer in the race for power since the Wii, and is no longer in the home console market since the failure of the Wii U.

Just as Sony is no longer in the handheld market, but it remains in direct competition with Microsoft because they target the same audience and their consoles remain very similar technologically unlike Nintendo.

I'm a Nintendo fanboy now for pointing out the same thing I've been pointing out for over 10 years that PlayStation giving up on the portable market was a huge mistake? They took for granted that market and their position in Japan and now they seem unable to do anything about it.

Sony #1 just because they beat the trash that is Xbox? Why can't PS4 or PS5 sales be compared to the Switch? This Jim Ryan clown was handled the PS4 one of the most successful consoles of all time and with way more resources managed to release a PS5 console that 4 years later is still tracking behind the PS4. There are no excuses for the PS5 besides bad business decision and lack of support, the hardware itself is great.

You Sony fanboys better start praying that the next Nintendo console is pathetically weak to the point third-party devs won't support it because otherwise PlayStation will find itself out of position.

Xbox is dead, move on. Why is power the only determining factor? Is Sony still in the race for power when something like the 4090 exists? Stop making up excuses and framing things in a way that gives Sony credit where none is due.

The funny thing is, is that at every opportunity Sony had they have shown they don't believe in the console market and here you are thinking that Nintendo is the one that quit.

I don’t see what any of this has to do with the discussion at hand? 😂🤣

I agree with all of this, but it still doesn’t change the fact that the Switch Lite is objectively not a console 😂😂
