But series S and Xbox are both on their way out. Support is being dropped.
No it isn't unfortunately, to this day plenty of games still get PS4 versions.

Switch 2 will also have an opportunity to get plenty of great releases like Elden Ring, Baldur's Gate 3 and many other games that skipped the Switch.

Nintendo strategy is playing out masterfully. The only piece missing now is for us to find out that they'll also have a non portable more powerful version of the system.

It's not as simple as that. If you take a closer look, you'll see that :
  • Sony remains the master of home consoles.
  • Nintendo is still king on handheld consoles.
And Sony still has the best sales average despite having only 7 consoles and only entering the market in 1994.

Nintendo :
  1. Color TV-Game - 1977 HC
  2. Game & Watch - 1980 HD
  3. Famicom - 1983 HC
  4. GameBoy - 1989 HD

  9. GameCube - 2001 HC
  10. Nintendo DS - 2004 HD
  11. Wii - 2006 HC
  12. Nintendo 3DS - 2011 HD
  13. Wii U - 2012 HC
  14. Nintendo Switch - 2017 HD
SONY :
  1. PlayStation - 1994 HC
  2. PlayStation 2 - 2000 HC
  3. PlayStation Portable - 2004 HD

  2. Xbox 360 - 2005 HC
  3. Xbox One - 2013 HC

  4. Atari 7800 - 1986 HC
  5. Atari XEGS - 1987 HC
  6. Atari Lynx - 1989 HD
  7. Atari Jaguar - 1993 HC
Not to quibble but there are loads of inaccuracies on this. The Color TV game and home Pong don't count under the retro gaming community's definition of console because they didn't have a means of using outside data sources (such as a cratridge, or download to memory from CD or internet), the SMS, as far as I can tell, was a rebadged SG-1000, maybe with better internals like a 1980s Pro version, the G&W units had totally different internals depending on what they are and shouldn't be grouped together and the Virtual Boy and Pokemon Mini are both missing. Oh, and if Nomad counts for Sega (it shouldn't) then PSTV should be there under Sony's home consoles.

I think you'll have a PS home console, a PS portable console and a PSVR standalone headset and if you don't want (as happened in PS3 during the early years) without installing other OS/stores. Getting more SP non-GaaS than now and on top of that GaaS.

Buying a game once you'll have them in these devices, plus if some day you want to play one on a tablet, PC or laptop you'll be able to do so without paying an extra.

Your favorite company will make way more money than now so they'll afford to make way more great high budget games, acquire more companies and create more teams.

I think you'd like that future, I don't get why you don't like it and prefer the scenario of -if market continues in the trend of the last decade or so- having to stop making big budget games, having to reduce the amount of games they make, lose total gaming market share letting the storefronts of MS, Epic, Valve, etc. pass Sony.

I think Sony right now has to solidify their lead on consoles and cloud killing Xbox, and become the top 1 publisher on Steam to later create their own PC store to stop paying Valve their cut, becoming the market leader in console and PC getting the 100% from both. Plus later to do the same in mobile and VR: to become also the top 1 in both platforms (in case of VR, to extend their current lead in non-standalone VR to standalone VR+MR).

Well, PC growth is faltering. So I don't think adding anything to PC is wise. When they should be trying to undermine and minimize gaming on PC completely.

PlayStation is console. That is the brand. If they dilute it, it becomes less IMO.

We see how VR didn't really succeed and only spread Sony thinner. Now we can clearly see PC ports are not selling, HFW being a huge flop on PC. PC just isnt the goldmine you think.

Well, PC growth is faltering.
The value of PC for Sony, more than its growth, is their current size is aprox. as big as the whole console market, and its popularity for AAA/AA games in countries where consoles aren't/can't be popular.

Countries that include the biggest one in gaming revenue and userbase and the fastest growing ones (India and some from Asia and LATAM).

With the numbers we have so far PSVR2 is achieving their goal: to outsell PSVR1, which Sony was happy with. Sony are the kings of non-standalone, VR. So VR is successful for them.

It's an expensive, nascent technology on their early adopter stage. I think it's still a couple generations (one being maybe too optimistic) away from being something that will jump to the mainstream.

It wasn't realistic to expect PSVR1 or 2 to go mainstream and selling 100M, if you mean this by being successful.

Now we can clearly see PC ports are not selling, HFW being a huge flop on PC. PC just isnt the goldmine you think.
The Sony numbers show they are making hundreds of millions per year with PC and that every year they make way more than the previous year.

The Insomiac leak also shown us that since each port cost around 2M they need around 80K units sold or so (can't remember the exact number) to be profitable.

Helldivers 2 seems to be selling as much in PC as in PS5, to the point that seems it's breaking sales records for any Sony game, and that pretty likely will cause Sony generating more revenue in PC this fiscal year than the one they had estimated.

So yes, PC is becoming a big revenue source for Sony with a huge profit margin and yearly growth, meaning this extra revenue and profit will be way higher in a few years.

If they have a non portable version it'll get slammed like every other time they've tried to face Playstation in that arena. And the fact of the matter is whatever works for Switch 2 for a few years is immediately wiped out once the next PlayStation comes out. It's not a masterful plan, it's staggered timing.

If it's just a different SKU like the Switch Lite was it won't get slammed it will just work like an more potent non-portable version (a lot like a PS5 Pro is for the base PS5) that will benefit from the massive momentum of the platform as a whole.

Instead of hybrid and portable only they can improve to a hybrid and non-portable versions this time and expand to a bigger market.

You can laugh all you want now, but I'll be the one making up excuses in the future when PlayStation loses more market share to Valve and Nintendo. Denial won't help PlayStation at all. Just like Xbots ignoring the problems with Xbox and making up excuses never helped that brand.

If they were as aggressive with supporting VR as they are with PC ports maybe they would've succeeded. Plenty of PS4 games could've benefited from VR versions like God of War for example (a game that would work perfectly with VR since it has no camera cuts). They didn't even bother porting Astro's Playroom to PSVR2 but they bothered porting Sackboy and R&C to PC.

GT7 is the perfect example of how to properly support VR. There are plenty of games that could work for both 2D and VR at the same time combat flight simulation games being the perfect example and a direct answer to a big MS exclusive game.

PSVR2 makes drastically more sense for them to support than PC yet Sony is incapable of doing for PS5 games what modders to for free on PC.

Focusing on the meager income from ports, misses how much they could possibly be losing from not focusing completely on their console.

Steam doesn't really make any games and the two they recently have (CS2 & Half Life Alyx) didn't come to PS4/5 or PSVR.... I think it's time that Sony wake up and realize that what they are doing is making themselves very vulnerable to being hurt very badly.

Sony is playing with fire, assuming a 50/50 split between PS5 and PC for Helldivers CS + Dota is still 3 times bigger than that. Steam has a lot going on for it already without Sony going out of their way to help them.

It will absolutely get slammed. The fact that the switch lite didn't sell gangbusters proves that the main appeal of the switch is its portability. Take that away and you have the lowest appealing home console on the market. Nintendo were quickly and mercilessly relegated to third once Xbox entered the market. Falling behind Xbox? Yeesh.

You can make all the excuses you want for your fictitious scenario, but dooming Sony and propping up *checks notes* Nintendo who got booted out of the console market and Valve who preside over a dying platform is absurd. Sony is in the best position of any platform holder with their massive wealth of broad IPs, colossal revenue, and phenomenally successful GaaS titles.

They said their focus will continue being the console (their main revenue source) and PC (+ other new markets) would be a secondary revenue source to bump their profits.

True, they must make a ton of money and profit with Steam thanks to the 3rd party games, so they focus on it and don't need to sell their games outside to keep being profitable, specially when they don't have over two dozen AAA titles under development.

That makes no fucking sense, the fact that the cheap portable only version didn't sell well proves that the appeal of the switch is just the portability?

Proves that the "main appeal" of the switch is portability, yes. The crowd that wanted portability were perfectly satisfied by the portable features of the main switch SKU. They didn't open up a new market for the Switch here, nor would they do so if a stationary SKU was released btw - the hybrid likely fulfills that need already.

You sound like Xbots chasing growth in overlapping markets - PC, cloud, subscriptions.

Hopefully Sony is a little more perceptive than you or they are about to be blind sided.

Yall are thinking too hard. The reason why the switch sells so well is because it has games that people want. The form factor is a non issue.

Its portability is a major factor in its success. In Japan, for example, the Switch has sold 32 million units, while the Wii U has only sold 3 million, which goes to show that its portable nature has a big impact on sales.

The Switch carried over most of the Wii U games, and yet the Wii U was a commercial failure and the Switch was a success despite sharing the same games.

  • Nintendo hanheld console (7 systems) : 612.93 million
  • Nintendo home console (7 systems) : 281.86 millions

The truth is that, apart from the Wii, Nintendo's home consoles have never been huge successes, unlike their handhelds.

sure but that's no reason to make a distinction between the switch and switch lite. If the Switch is, as we say, most saleable due to its portability, then it makes no difference (other than a $200 price being more attractive) to its sales. That's like saying the PS5 digital should be counted as a separate console; part of its main functionality is gone.

In fact, Nintendo home consoles sales declined every generation since the NES (Wii being the exception).

To the point that the most recent one, WiiU, sold so bad they considered that wasn't worth it to release a home console succesor. They prefered to include tv out to their portable, like the PSP but without needing a cable sold separatedly.

Exactly. The failure of the Wii U was one too many for them in this sector.

Switch/Oled = Handheld + TV Mode (Like Home console)
Switch Lite = Handheld only

It's not me saying it, it's Nintendo.

UXXJ0NH.jpeg

And since Nintendo fanboys like to say that the Switch is also a home console, we're just pointing out that the Switch Lite isn't, so if we make a direct comparison with the PS2 (which is 100% home), The sales of Switch Lite cannot be counted, you have to be logical.
Now, if you want my opinion, the Switch isn't a home console, and it doesn't matter whether it's a hybrid or not, it's a portable at heart.

As for your example of the PS5, Pro or Digital, it doesn't matter, all 3 are still home consoles and target the same market, the Switch Lite isn't since it's lost its TV mode and only targets the mobile market, whereas the classic and the oled target both markets and can be compared with others home console.

Almost as if they found a solution to not have to support two systems and still have a presence on both markets and that resulted in their best selling console ever, despite everyone else predicting than portable consoles were doomed because of mobile.
