RE is more action focused gameplay.
It is a departure from the gameplay from RE1 and RE2.

Action focused or not, the animations and movement of Jill in RE3 were superior to Claire and Chris in CV. They felt robotic in comparison.

Jill looked more life like and so were her movements.

Remember playing CV on the Dreamcast at the time and noticing it then.

CV's story was shit. Sorry, not sorry. It was so off putting with anime super villan Wesker and anime love interest Steve, good greif! Disturbed cross dresser Alfred too. Reboot that shit. Zero was no better with their oprea singing train attacker. Just what the hell were Capcom trying do to the story of RE around 2000?

Gameplay wise RE3 had the obvious 180' turn, the dodge, the dynamic choice branching paths. It had the extra time mechanic in Mercenaries mode. It also had other things, like within a pack of zombies they would crawl towards, or one would zoom forward from the back faster than the others. It mixed enemy types in same 'rooms'. I don't think that happened previously. I'm fairly certain I saw a Drain Demon accidentally hack a zombie's head off in a tight street corner as the player dodged around them; the same way RE2make's Mr X would paste the ever loving shit out of whatever enemy was inbetween him and you.

Next town over you have Dino Crisis 2 implimenting Combo Meter mechanics. Now the Dino Crisis franchise should have taken-on ''Action RE'' engine. It makes sense to be pulling out those RE6 Leon acrobatics, like jumping on your back out of the range of, and shooting-up, a leaping attack. And who amongst us didn't want to German Suplex that little shit Compy that stole our key card in DC2?

Outbreak had an inventory screen which didn't pause the game, and normal enemies (I hope, it may have been Leech Man admittedly) were able to follow you room to room (not just tyrant Nemesis in RE3). One time on Outbreak I was frantically in the inventory menu trying to craft and use a herb combo, and I heard something walk into the fucking room behind me. Couldn't see it, yet, because of fixed camera positioning of the room back in Outbreak days, and me trying to get out of the inventory menu as well etc. Just a nice little piece of emergeant gameplay, but it shows there was more that could have been done with the Classic RE formula gameplay wise. I guess I could have nailed boards over the door as a barricade, if that gimmick applied to that level and was game-wide, I can't remember, but Outbreak had the boarding-up mechanic. Other stuff, like the slowly shoulder-carry Bob's heavy ass type of escourt mission in RE Outbreak vs Dino Crisis 2's interpretation where Paulina was free to run around, loosely following you as you blasted dinos. Dino Crisis 2 also had set peace fights in vehicles, on gun turretts (I guess Mr X in RE2 is a setpeace fight too). I wish Outbreak had stayed in the oven until all levels planned for Files 1, 2 and 3 were completed, instead of launching a year or so before for no apparent reason. I mean the UK didn't even get the oppotunity to play it online, if I recall correctly. I bought a PS2 Network adaptor for jack shit.

I bet they launched Outbreak early because they backed out of Remaking 2,3,CV from the original GC deal when sales weren't upto expectations with REmake and RE0. They needed something to rush out the door for PS2 other than a port of CVX.

Classic RE didn't need to die. Action RE could have still lived-on in Dino Crisis if they didn't send that to space and blow it up.

So true about RE4. Great game. Shit Resident Evil.

Because of it we got RE5 and RE6. Abominations.

til dis day...those games should have just been Resident Evil: Subtitle.

4,5 and 6 should have only been left to the concepts of the classic games as its not like Capcom has never done that before. They did that with Mega Man X and Legends and that other RPG shit they were doing lol (I forgot the name)

So they should have just called it Resident Evil extreme or some shit, cause the expectation of having all those RE elements is what I feel caused a lot of people to dislike 5 and 6 to such a degree where if it was known from the jump this would be something else, but still in the RE world, I think many would be more open to accepting it as it is.

So I love RE4, but to get my RE fix, its simply not a game I play as its concept is just too far removed. For me to get that RE feeling, I want backtracking, puzzles, locked doors, limited ammo, saves, finding weapons vs buying them etc. All of that is something I still love with RE and playing it with friends is even more fun as we are always yelling over each other in terms of suggesting what to do next like "save if you think you might get bit" lol We love doing that with the majority of the series...up until 4.

So I love RE7 and 8's return to form, but I can't help but to feel that RE4,5 and 6 should have never been mainline RE titles and the direction it took was just too much away from the base concept for it to be main RE title. It just lacks too much of those elements. RE Outbreak just being online didn't have it titled, yet that fucking game has more concepts of the core RE titles then 4,5 and 6. If they understood it being online was enough not to make it a main one, they should have got that with shooting crazy cult foreigners, buying weapons and punching boulders in volcanoes lol Those are the cocaine days of RE lol

So true.

I remember importing the US version of RE4 for the Gamecube here in the UK.

I enjoyed the game but at the same time I was literally hurting cause it wasn't Resident Evil.

No puzzles, No Backtracking, No conservation of Ammo, enemies with tasers, gatling guns and firing canon balls. You even had a giant statue chasing you.

What was Capcom even thinking.

Yes RE7 and RE8 are a step in the right direction. RE7 more than RE8 but for me RE2 Remake is the perfect formula for future RE games.

It’s definitely the most boring out of the classic gameplay titles and after 4 games in it was stale as fuck too. Story started to turn for the worse with it… I mean it was always hot garbage but they went over the top here with some characters and it was lame delivery too.

I like Code Veronica up to the cargo ship. It loses me when you play as Chris whom I also dislike…. Partly to do with how much RE5 sucks.

Thankfully they followed it with RE4 and saved the series with the greatest of all time.

(I 100% prefer Zero over this — I also liked Zero a good bit when it first dropped)

RE4 is an Abomination.:devilish:

It might have helped the Third Person Genre but derailed the Resident Evil series. Capcom are still unsure whether RE is a survival horror series or an Action horror series.

Old school RE loyalists know the right answer.😎

I loved the game, was super awesome, but it didn't aged too well so i don't excpect anyone that play it recently to like it.
Please tell me you like re4, I'm building a re4 fan club on iconera of re4 super fans I can trust. There is a war in the RE community and I need as much help as I can get! 🏠

My fairest take on RE4 is that the story is a pos. The need to changeover to Action RE formula is vastly overstated, as discussed in my last post.
Mechanically, I never got-on with the half-step controls between old school tank controls and modern OTTS shoulders. I think that may have actually gotten worse over time as the modern TPS controls have taken shape with muscle memory. The latest PS4 Remake of RE4 put in an extra option, something to do with the camera or the aiming onto another thumbstick I think, that made it better but there's still something about the movement that doesn't hit for me. If RE4make plays like RE2make and rewrites some of the stupider story stuff, it might finally give me a new appreciation for the game itself, but not Action RE's replacement of the old formula.

Mikami himself stated he hated re4s story and hopes Capcom fixes it in the remake. His birthday is tomorrow BTW. I think the one thing that didn't age well in re4 was its story. In the 2000s with 80s nostalgia being big I think re4s story was fine for what the game was trying to be at the time. But in 17 and a half years story telling in gaming has gotten more serious and something with a messy story like re4 wouldn't be considered for goty unless the game was revolutionary in some other way like how re4 was gameplay wise.
Re4 is the first game Shinji Mikami was the writer for and the only other game he was credited as writer was killer 7.

This series has such dumb, nonsense story and lore that I stopped caring with RE4.

To me it’s just a brand for the premiere action horror series and the very best at it.

Like I have no idea if the current games connect to Wesker, t-virus and any of the events of the old games. Seems like it doesn’t matter…

Loved it, and can't count how many time i've play it, gameplay was too revolutionnary

BUTT... the story was pure nonsens and shit

Still super iconic game. But could've been even beyond that if the story wasn't that wack, some fanservice like Ada/Léon meeting, and Wesker appearance at the end saved it a bit tho.

I could like RE4 if I could pass through Cabin part without feel asleep 😴
I mean the max I could play that boring game design was 30 minutes and I have no ideia if I was awake or not the whole 30 minutes.
I just give up.

Sounds like he couldn’t get passed the cabin …

I still find this remake unnecessary. I would’ve done another playthru on the most recent port available. I guess I’ll hold off maybe

I feel like in the remake the entire opening needs to be reimagined because I think you guys need to consider that Leon is basically going to some foreign country breaking into a person's house and that person is speaking their own native language, tries to defend themselves against an intruder in their home and Leon kills them and makes it sound like he is the victim lol

He doesn't really break in the the original game. In fact in the remake trailer we see him opening the door to the first cabin. While in the original the door is open and its the only way anywhere since the path is blocked by a truck 🚚

What he is doing is still legally breaking in.

As in...you can't just walk into someone's house and be like "the door is wide open your honor, how was i breaking in doe" lol
