It comes from the corporate culture of arrogance combined with a total lack of understanding of how gaming works.

They were able to force the business world into subscriptions, because there is no choice if a business wants to be able to operate with outside partners. If you don’t use MS Office, you can’t easily and reliably collaborate.

Gamers have a choice, as much as Nadella didn’t realize it. Making 365 a thing was possible because there are no viable competitors to Windows in the business world. MS painted a vision where gamers would pay monthly to game, gamers told them where to cram it.

The rest is unfolding before our eyes, and if the chilly reception the concept of OS subscriptions is getting in the corporate world, MS could find itself in a bad spot in their core business too.

Offering their titles on other platforms is a symptom of that and indicative that a major change of direction is needed. As well, what's the difference if games go to Nintendo or Sony? Sales are sales and since you prefer their platform, this will help in that area too.
