Yeah no one would've ever figured out how to put online onto consoles if Xbox hadn't shown up late and charged for it.
Also, reading through the Phil Spencer confirms Xbox is going full multiplatform thread on Reee is full of peak delusion:

I think it is what they’re aiming at - getting bigger audiences for their titles to one day convert over the line, with added “play anywhere” to soften the catalogue blow. Funny thing is I liked the fallout series but it didn't satisfy me at all it ended far too quickly & I guess like the games well have to wait a loooooongg time to get a few more episodes
